Also, can someone tell my why Swofford is such a controversial figure?

That looks like it's going to be really sweet.

I'm really confused as to what kind of movie it is. That trailer was very, uh, diffuse?
My choice of wording sucks.
Kak

From the trailer it looks like it's going to be more about the lives with the other soldiers and cooping with it all rather than about combat and action.

Yeah, watched it again, reminded me a bit of apocalypse now.

Yeah it looks pretty good, as vecdran said it looks like an Apocalypse Now kinda movie. I'm sure someone here has read the book was it any good? I saw it in the book store all the time but never looked at it or anything.

The book's pretty good, does a good job of detailing the day to day monotony Swofford and the other Marines he knew had to deal with. Here come the spoilers.
Like Kak said, the book and the movie are more about the "hurry up and wait" kind of rhythm of the military. There is little no to action in that trailer mainly because there is little to no action experienced by Swofford. The last time I read the book was well over a year ago, and if I remember correctly, Swofford doesn't even end up shooting his sniper rifle except to practice and re-zero the scope.

From what I gather, some think he is excessively whiny and make the Corps look bad. I read his book, and I didn't get that, but whatever.
Yes, I know I'm quoting myself, but I wrote that in case anyone else was wondering.

People don't like the idea that the military can be imperfect.
Looking forward to it....I've heard he was a hell of a sniper.

Based on what exactly?

I just read Jarhead for my English course at my college. It struggles to answer the question for swafford on whether he liked or disliked the war.
It gave him a purpose and the marine corps was his calling from very early in his life (his father served and his father served and so on and so forth).
::::SPOILERS DOWN HERE::::
Like GrosPoisson said, there is little fire-action in the novel; a little artillery fire from friendly troops and a couple bombings by friendly planes. They scope out a city from a mile away with the sniper rifles and I believe that swafford's life changing moment is when he needs to shoot someone but he doesnt; ending his tour in the gulf without firing a shot in combat. The story goes back and forth between a few of swafford's "friends" and their lives after the war. It tells about his friends suicide along with the desertion of his girlfriend to another man.
It begs the question throughout the entire novel and hopefully the book that - is war really worth the lives of the men who serve in it. Swafford's closing comments in the novel state that he would hope that nobody would follow in his footsteps unless they have made up their minds completely.

Shooter is Gunny Jack Coughlin's USMC sniper book. He was in the "Darkside" unit, we kind of shadowed them for a lot of the invasion. He wrote a book, then Darkside 6 (LTC McCoy I believe) wrote one. It pretty much follows my platoons path through the war.

As someone in the corps, I can say that even 12-odd years later, most of the complaints he had still ring true. Its an experience like no other, but the fact is, Most of this shit sucks most of the time. Oh- and to the person who said gas mask football looks fun: Its not. Side note: I have a few friends in STA platoon, those guys are so fucking crazily in shape it is not funny. The indoc is basically 3 days of pack runs, more pack runs, obstacle courses, and other such. If memory serves, you run 3 PFT length runs (3 miles)s in boots-and-utes, at least one with a pack, (boots, cammie pants) on the first day. Theres also a 500 meter swim, and some other stuff. They also do pack runs almost every day. Crazy motherfuckers.

btw, the football game in the gasmasks is portrayed in the book as a "field fuck" to show off for the CO in town :/
And yes, it does mean exactly what it says - although they're still clothed...
Not something i'd call a good time either.

In most war's there isn't as much time spent shooting (or being shot at) compared to how much time you spent sitting on your ass, watching empty spaces for "movement" or my favorite, burning shit....

Yes. In the marines, scout snipers are STA. In the army, at a larger level they are RSTA, which is what my battalion (now squadron) has become.
PS: Garry...gotta love burning shit in diesel fuel ;)

For some reason after reading it on the web, it's just something airborne guys spread around taking credit for, maybe half of the storytellers actually trying it (but also just copying it)

The marine corp does not endorse or support this movie, and and encourages marines to not answer any questions civilians may have about the movie Jarhead... I hope its worth 8 bucks, cause if the marine corp thinks it well make them look bad its probably true.

Reviews are quite divided on this film-- 50%. Another one of those love it or hate it kinda' movies. Either the sheer lack of trigger-pulling and limbs flying across the screen will bore people to death or they'll be in emotional awe by the portrayal of a war movie that isn't "vietnamitized." Ah well, either way I'm watching it, considering how much hollywood as been taking a giant shit on creativity and substance these days.

It wasn't bad at all. Not an action movie though, so don't expect that. And do expect to see lots of nudity, both men and women, as well as multiple girls getting screwed on camera.
All in all, it's a really sad film.

.....war is getting too hi-tech for the common grunt, and at some point in the future, wars will be fought without the common soldier...
The exact same thing has been stated constantly since the first practical combat aircraft was fielded. Those stating it have been proven wrong every decade since.
