Im going hunting here in november and I have the choice between these two. I was thinking of getting the G3 because its just a badass gun, but the bolt action remington is just as cool. So which one should I get? (Just hunting deer, nothing big like bears or elk or w/e)

I'd go with the G3.

The problem with getting a G3 is that an authentic HK-91(Civilian G3) will cost you in the realm of $1500 or more. On the other hadn, you can get a decent clone from JLD (PTR-91) for half that price, but I've heard mixed reviews about their quality.
That being said, I'd still get a PTR over a 700 just because I have a thing for auto-loaders.

I went down to dunhams today and there was a G3 for about 500$ish. As the guy said I would have to limit it to 6 bullets while hunting (dont know if this is michigan law or not). He recommended the 700, for being cheaper and a good gun. I think I will get the 700 for now and maybe next season buy the G3.

Sure it was a G3 (or more accurately, a HK-91)? It might of been a clone or CETME.

If a G3 was $500-ish, chances are it is either a CETME(eh) or a Century Arms knockoff(bleh). If that's the case, avoid century G3s like the plague.

I actually have a decent CAI CETME.
Granted their track record is not great on them, but they did occasionally turn out a decent one, though i think they put mine togeather right purely by accident :D
as to mike's question, go for the rem 700.
If you don't know exactly what to look for on a cetme/g3 it's very easy to be screwed.
If can be a beautiful looking rifle, but the most serious problems are internal, shaved bolts, cracked rollers, bad headspacing etc etc.

If you get a G3, will you put optics on it?

I dont know, the g3 is out of my price range anyway, so even if I get it I doubt I would have enough for a scope, but reguardless I doubt I would.

Go the Remmy - almost infinite upgrade possibilities.

That's a pretty conservative estimate, too. I've not seen an honest to god HK-91 for less than $2200 in a long time.
Not that it matters to me, mind - I got mine before the prices went crazy stupid.

I've come to realize that buying guns is like playing the fucking stock market. You need to know when to buy and when to sell...

No kidding. I should have held on to my HK-93 and -94 for longer... they're selling for ridiculous amounts now too. Not to mention my old Galil.
I just wish I had gotten in to Class 3 when you didn't have to sell your firstborn.

You'll get a much more "bang for your buck" out of a 700. They're less than $500 (Wal-Mart here has one for around $350), and because they're bolt action and have limited ammunition capacity, you'll be less likely to waste the ammo you have.

mikemyers: I just bought a remington m700....as long as you don't buy it from Walmart, you almost cannot go wrong with it.
