Well Im not sure if anyone here gives a rats ass about BOSS (http://www.browning.com/faq/detail.asp?ID=107), but I have been curious as to how much it will improve the groups, on say... well anything. So here I sit with my .300 and its big BOSS brake which works pretty good as a brake, but will be worth a damn as a BOSS?

My base load is a 165 Sierra GameKing sitting on top of 76 grains of Reloader 22 powder, with Winchester brass and CCI 250 Magnum primers. It should give me ~3100 FPS, I could run it up to 78 grains and 3200 FPS, but I'm under the illusion that if I back off a few grains with my "mild" loads, my barrel might give a damn. Probably not... but It helps me sleep at night.

The purpose of this load is for my all around animal killing, target maiming, zombie needs, as the bullet is cheap (Paps gave me the box, he didn't want to feed them to his .30-06) and it Sierra totes it as a capable of taking up to elk. It does wonders on praire dogs (doubt its expanding, but they didn't feel any difference) and should handle coyotes and deer fine.

Right now, with Mr. BOSS set at a factory suggested number for 168 grain loads, I can hold about an inch at 100 yards. This would be outstanding for a Fudd Gun, but my .300 is a fucking shitty hunting rifle, (probably a poor target rifle too) so Im after tighter groups than 1". I could do extensive case prep, but that tends to defeat my ideas of a GP load that I can reload several hundred of, quickly, and employ for any and all sorts of shooting. Any accuracy gains I see in the next months, should be due entirely to my adjustment of the BOSS brake.

I'll update it as I go, hopefully with some decent gains. Right now, its a bastard outside (somewhat hot) and after shooting 3-6 rounds the barrel is scorching and doesn't cool for some time.

I have heard mixed reviews of BOSS performance, but i will be interested in what you find out from firsthand testing.

In theory BOSS should help, but we all know how theories go:D

Ichy, here's a very interesting suggestion that is easy to try.

Try shooting a group without the Boss installed at all. Yes, you'll get pummeled for a few rounds but it would be an interesting true base line.

Before you take it off though, from it's current setting count how many turns plus remaining partial turn it takes to bottom the BOSS out against it's threads bottoming it out. That way you can return it to it's setting when you re-install it by threading it on till it bottoms out, then back counting to the initial setting you originally had.

Harmonic dampeners are an interesting thing, used to be JP Enterprises offered one for their 223Rems that included the JP recoil eliminator, was an interesting HONKING piece of steel.

Hmm... maybe Ill try that when I reach BOSS zen. Right now Im too much of a vagina to take unbraked .300.

Good idea tho, to see how much the BOSS helps all together.

Just remember to count how many complete rotations plus the couple additional hatch marks it takes to completely bottom out from your current setting that way you can always count back up.

Same goes for target turrets on a scope for elevation, remember how many full revolutions plus additional MOA it takes to dial up to your zero from being bottomed out at one extreme that way you can always reset should you wind up playing with some other load or dialing to some distance and forgetting to reset back to your zero.
