There isn't really a modelling section so here's where I'm gonna put this.

Note that this is my first serious model I've EVER done so, some seriouc C&C will be required from you guys as well.

I'll be updating with pics about once or twice a day to show progress.

DAY 1 - Making volume and adding some basic curves.

I'm not too good with the stages of modeling, but it looks okay so far. I will be able to help more when it is further in production.

Is this model for FA though?

Nope :p

I'm just modelling this. When I learn how to animate a little better I might animate it but I don't see it happening for quite some time.

So it's more art, right now, than a project for FA.

I figure by the time I learn how to animate and rig my model for SMD export FA will be long dead.

It looks, uh... backwards.

Or, said a different way, the slide doesn't have any of those cuts on the right side.

Are the slide notches only on one side? I had only one good reference picture at the time. It's easily fixed, though.

Not much of an update today. I scrapped the slide because some of the edges magically disappeared and you can't easily replace edges in max. I made the trigger gaurd and smoothed the parts that need to be smoothed. No pic though. My host is temporarily down.

I would seriously like to do this job in XSI but I need 4.0 before I can.

Yep. (http://www.springfield-armory.com/images/pistols/PX9109LLarge.jpg)

You realize you could easily just go to the web page of any big 1911 manufacturer and look up their hi-res photos, right?

Wooo he has since then been given multiple reference pictures, so I think he's doing a lot better now.

Can we see some updated pictures of it to see the progress? :)

omg necro'ed to the max. But it's to update so it's not illegal :)

Anyways, I finished it. The crap I originally posted was made in 3ds max....which, I have come to realize, sucks ass compared to XSI.

Here are some renders of my finished colt 1911a1. Sits at 3500 triangles, or something. That might be WITH the bullets, though, I'm not sure.

It's pretty fucking sweet. Why use 5 sided cylinders though? Use 12 so it'll be round and nice.

It's honestly my FIRST (and so far, only) weapon model evar. But I think I did pretty good.

Thanks for the compliment, dude :)

And to Xhair - That's on my to-do list for the model. It's done but to make it look better I'm gonna add some more edges on the top of the slide. It looks nice and smooth but I'm assuming the back of the slide will show it's low poly usage in game :(

I hate 3ds Max now. I tried XSI and now I can't even model in 3ds max. It just sucks compared to it, IMO.

Just taste it, Rob! TASTE IT!

Yeah, I much prefer XSI. The smoothing is way better and modeling is very workflow-oriented. That 1911 took me about a week of casual working in XSI. I'll bet it would've taken me a month with max. I just didn't really get a grasp on the keyboard shotcuts with max but with XSI it feel so...professional, or something.

But to each his own! :)
