quick question, why on earth would this tv show, tryin to be realistic and show the true things happening over there, show a normal squad of the US Army, no offense im not dissing the army. but why would they show just regular infantry soldiers going on a hostage rescue mission just by them selves? with out any back up, or air support or anything. normally the only time you would see that little ammount of soldiers going on a mission like that, would be if they were spec ops, rangers, delta, or special forces, i dont get it

For the same reason rural municipalities and and county governments will pool their resources to form a SWAT team.....that might be all that's available in a hurry.

but isnt that dangerous? i mean i know even with specially trained soldiers it is risky, but isnt it like 10 times more dangerous sending regulars?

Are you sure it isn't really 11.387 times as dangerous? So it's dangerous.....well, that's why soldiers carry guns.
One uses the materials at hand.

'Ive been watching them as they come out, i dont think realism is the central part of this TV show, the impresion i get from "Over There" is there trying to show a story about the personel problems faced by troops on deployment and certain issues that have occured during the campaign so far.
My question is, is the production company making this show recieving any support from D.O.D film department, or are they all on there own?

Just because someone lacks formal training does not mean they don't have the capabilities. Normal infantry learn many of the same house to house and fighting with non-combatants present techniques that special ops forces do. Really the only difference is extensiveness of training, and equipment availability. For example, you're average soldier probably won't have a MP5SD available.

I've found it very odd that you never even see the rest of the squad. Just those 5 guys including sergeant, and occationaly they show their Lietenant or Captain giving orders.
That said I really enjoy the show now (aside from episode 1). Also the beheading was a "oh shit..." moment.

Sounds like FSW in show form. Not that that's bad or anything.

im not saying they dont have what it takes, im just saying. say you had someone working on your car, would you pick some kid thats in auto shop at high school, that knows what he is doing, and is good at it, or would you pick a professional mechanic? i know that spec ops soldiers werent ready and they had to depoly someone fast, i just found that hard to believe they would send someone who lacks the specialty training of the special forces.

That's exactly what I was planning on doing, actually. Taking my car to the local tech school automotive class. They fix my car, and I pay them dirt cheap. If they know how to do it, and are good at it... then why should I care who does it, as long as it gets done?

gymbag: regular infantry have plenty of practice in hostage rescue and urban combat. While we don't practice HRT to the same level of proficiency as Delta, we know how to do it. You use what you have. Fuck, my squad had to react to a hostage situation that deteriated so rapidly we didn't even have a chance to call it in......we kicked in the door and made an entry. A squad of 8 guardsmen. We did just fine.

im not saying you guys cant do it, i just thought that was weird, and had to ask about it. and now that i do think about it, it does make sense if they dont have enough time to call up the special forces, to send in regular infantry.

I repeat: one uses what is immediately at hand when necessary. Think about the mistake made at Columbine.....the locals waited for the state police SWAT teams, and by the time the latter got there it was far too late.
