I have been to the local indoor gun range before, but all I have ever shot with was a Glock 17 and it feels pretty good in my hands. Anyone have any suggestions on other handguns that would be good to shoot? (preferably in 9mm)

They had around 30+ handguns and around 10 of them where 9mm handguns there.

Try out a IMI Jericho 941 or MR Baby Eagle. I've yet to fire one I havent loved.

SIGs are nice too.

Depends what you want to do with them. Some nice handguns I have used are the Springfield XD series, various glocks, sigs, and the 92f. Is there a reason you are wanting 9mm?

I don't get to shoot at the range too often so I'm trying to use lower caliber pistols to get used to shooting.

Springfield XD series

Tis nothing more than a repackaged GLOCK with some new-age 1911-Frame additions, like the frontal checkering on the slide for cocking from the front etc.

Sig Sauers are good, but expensive. The US Military considered the P226 to be a superior pistol to the Beretta M9, but only by a bee's dick and due to this, the M9 was purchased due to price difference per unit.

My advice is to go down to your local ranges and have a bit of a go at several different types of frames and models. It's all nice that we sit here in our chairs and say "Oh, this is nice, oh that's shit, because blah blah blah..." but in order for you to identify which firearm(s) will suit you, it's best you go out and get some trigger time on different weapons.

work your way through the standard big names

H&K USP compact
Sig 228
Beretta 92F
Beretta cougar
S&W 3rd gen 6900 series
S&W sigma 9s
Ruger P95
Walther P99
Springfield XD
Browning Hi-power

off the top of my head thats the midsized 9s aside from glocks that spring to mind.

If you want to try something more compact in 9mm add the sig 239, S&W 3900 series, Kahr K9.

Everyone has to shoot a SIG/Beretta/Glock/1911 at some point in their life.

Walther P99. I shot one when I was at the Scottsdale Gun Club (Well, the S&W99, actually) and it was a pretty solid handgun. The double-action trigger was a little annoying at first, but I got used to it.

I shoot Ruger P-series pistols better than any other. My next pistol is going to be a Ruger P345. That thing is nasty. God loves the .45 ACP.

I wasn't a big fan of them, I think it was wither the P85 or the P90 I shot, it was in .45, and I couldn't even hit the target everytime from 10 yards, even though I did much, much better with my dad's S&W .40, plus the ejecting cartridges flew straight up and back, to land on my head a couple times.

Then that was the P90.....the P85 is chambered in 9mm Parabellum.

If you can stand the awkwardness of the pistol; just holding a USP Compact in .40 was an uncomfortable experience for me. I asked the owner why it balanced the way it did, and he field-stripped it to show me this oddly-placed lump of metal in the internals that was way past the middle of the slide, and made it feel like it was leaning backwards in my hands.
