View Full Version : Weapons: Hypothetical purchase, found some cash

So apparently the new car I was eyeballing was sold for a set of wheels. Disappointed, I turn my new found budget to another realm.
I have 1,200.00 to spend on a gun. I haven't been paying attention to the prices of stuff, and I've always wanted an AR-15 style rifle (but I'm not stuck on this.) I want you to give me a sales pitch for a certain gun that you think would suit me.
Any other suggestions for good deals / good guns (I don't care what, really. I'm just interested in getting a quality piece that I can be proud of owning for once) will be helpful! I'm not looking for a .22. Handgun, rifle, or possibly shotgun would all be nice, so convince me to buy something!
What would I be using the gun for? Primarily just range shooting and general fun-having, as well as collecting. I can find a use for most guns, so this isn't a "I need something for this application!" I'd just like to see what you guys can come up with for suggestions.
Who knows, maybe I'll end up getting it if you're convincing enough.

I just donated the money I had set aside for a gun purchase to the Red Cross. Buy a Benelli if you must have a new gun, though.
whuh?

How far are you from grand forks? The Cabellas there had some cheap ar15s there.

pretty far
how cheap?
And sorry, I'm not a knee-jerk reactionist, nor do I want to get in a firebox debate in the weapons forum. Good for you for donating, but don't get off the topic.

Not that I have any weapons experience, but if/when I ever find myself in a weapons-free nation, I would buy an M1 Garand. Just a private fantasy of mine :)

Oooooh....
How about a Midlength AR-15 with an Aimpoint. Slap a bayonent and spend the rest on mags and ammo and blow some damn holes in paper. Be a handy little carbine, and fun to shoot.
M1 Garand would be equally awesome...
On the darker side of things, maybe a Sam-7 AKM Clone from Arsenal Inc. Very nice AKs...

None of these sound like sales pitches to me. "oooh, why don't you get THIS gun?" is more of a suggestion than a full-blown sales pitch.

Sorry, I failed to take note of your location. I guess I should have expected a response like that.
In any case, I made my suggestion: Buy a Benelli. The last I was looking into shotguns, the M3 Convertible was going for about $1200. The only reason I'm suggesting a shotgun is because I'm currently in the market for one, and have been looking at them a lot lately.
I don't know how many of you have ever had the luxury of firing anything Benelli, but they're very solid as far as construction goes, and they're spot on when it comes to accuracy (at least in my experience).
Speaking about Ergonomics, they beat out the Remington 870 that I have to walk around with at work, which is fairly hard to do. Anyway, good luck in your search.

First thing, get a COMPLETE NEW weapon. You want the benefit of a warranty, and the knowledge that its 100% original and in the best condition possible. Go for an AR15. Personally, I like Bushmaster AR15s, in particular their 16" carbines with telescoping stocks, full 16" barrels, and a birdcage flash supressor. They cost much less then a Colt, and are trusted and used by police depts and shooters everywhere.
The bonus is, the ammo is low cost, and plentiful. You also get the warm, fuzzy feeling of owning an 'evil assault weapon'. The weapon retains its value quite well, though admittedley not as well as a colt. The sheer nuber of accessories and parts available for the ar-15 family weapons is simply staggeing. Hundreds of optical choices, tons of lights, laser sights, aiming devices, night vision, etc. Magazines for the ar-15 are as cheap as can be, and are made by the hundreds of thousands every year. Its also a total hoot to shoot. 30 rounds at your disposal, and an innocent bowling pin on the wrong end. You also have one of the LARGEST user communities for any firearm at your disposal when you own an ar15, ar15.com.

Everyone probably already knows what I'm going to suggest, and they cost about 1/20 of what he has saved up. Plus I'm really not in the mood to write a long speech about whatever.

Yeah, I was being pretty dumb. I apologize, YarPirate, and all other parties that had to deal with me shitting up the thread.

Here's an added helper... I'm too lazy to find pictures and websites for these guns, so any images you have of the suggested weapons would be nice.
Sorry for the lack of information, should have said this earlier.
Also, more pistol suggestions would be nice!

If you're looking for something to blow ammo through with no rhyme or reason (aka plinking at 100 yards or so) look into an SKS, an AK, or some other old commie gun. Mosin Nagants are fun to shoot (the M44 in particular...you will have to figure out why for yourself ;)) and are accurate enough that you can gauge your improvement as a shooter. You can also buy one of each of these and a thousand rounds of ammo for each and still have money left over.
As has been suggested, the AR is a really great all-around platform if that's what you want(especially if you like to acthethorithze)...accurate, reliable, fun and cheap to shoot unless you have a recoil fetish. If you want to get into longer-range shooting there's always the 7.62x51 variants or you could look into a bolt-action rifle like a Remington 700.
Personally I would spend the money on a 12-gauge and various evilizing accessories, a clay thrower, lots of clays and target loads, and lots of slugs and things to break with slugs (unless you've got private property you can safely shoot on, you probably won't be allowed to shoot random shit with slugs :().
It's really hard to give a sales pitch unless you want a gun for a specific purpose, unless you want the colt cause it totally rules and it is the most accurate gun out of all of them and is super good for getting headshots and if you use bursts you can snipe with it too but it was better when it had a scope

I've had a bad experience with an SKS, and I really don't want one again.

Bought it for a ridiculous price (didn't care, I had money to burn at the time) (M59/66), bought some ammo from a friend who had an SKS (and it worked fine in his... non-corrosive JHP) and it wouldn't cycle the round after a shot. I cleaned it, oiled it, gave it a nice name, put in a new seal for the gas tube, stroked it, and it still wouldn't cycle. I tried new ammo to no avail. Sent it back to century arms, they sent it back to me without doing anything. Great. Grand. Still doesn't cycle. I finally try some cheap-ass winchester ammo (I was really trying to avoid using US ammo in a foreign gun for whatever reason) and it cycled. Great! yay!
After looking at the target, I realized one key thing... not only does it not group well even at 25 yards, but the bullets were entering sideways. Wirebrushed the bore again, cleaned and oiled everything, and went back to the old ammo that didn't cycle... Tried three brands again, all of them keyholed.
Got pissed, threw it to the back of my closet, and the next time it saw the light of day was when I sold it.... and yes, I told him about the shitty part of the gun. I'm not dishonest. I used to have pictures of the target, but three formats later they're gone. Sorry.

Did you try switching the gas valve from single shot to semi-auto D:
Sounds like a crappy one, but I would never buy a non-russian SKS anyway, all the other ones have ugly finishes.

Yes, I neglected to mention that. I tried a lot of shit that is too insignificant to even mention here, too.
