1MC is the term for the shipboard intercom on U.S. Navy vessels. This system broadcasts throughout the entire ship, and is loud enough that all embarked personnel are able to (normally) hear it. In movies, calls to General Quarters are made over the 1MC.

1. General Quarters - "This is not a drill, this is not a drill, General Quarters, General Quarters! All hands man your battlestations.....

2. Sweepers - "Sweepers, Sweepers, man your brooms. Sweep down all decks fore and aft. Sweep all passageways, ladderwells, and ......Take all trash to the fantail. Now sweepers."

That's from wikipedia... What got me curious was... "In movies..." Does that mean that General Quarters calls aren't made over the 1MC? And what's up with that last example?

No. They're made over the 1MC in real life, as well.

I don't know about the Navy, but in the CG, we don't pipe "This is not a drill."

For the CG, GQ is piped: "Now, General Quarters, General Quarters, all hands man your battlestations, obey all traffic patterns: Up and forward to port, down and aft to starboard. The smoking lamp is out, close all doors and hatches leading to the weatherdecks, set materiel condition Zebra throughout the ship. Now, General Quarters."

Sweepers is traditionally piped 15 minutes before Knock Off Ship's work, and is to signal everyone to do their daily clean-ups.

"Now, Sweepers, Sweepers, man your brooms. Give the ship a clean sweep down fore and aft, placing all trash in recepticals provided for on: (Wherever the nearest dumpster is)"
