With the recent crapola that happened in New Orleans, my desire for a "bug out" vehicle is higher than ever. I have wanted to buy a 6x6 for years and the thing keeping me from it is having an appropriate place to park it.

I could fill up a 6x6 with enough crap to drop out for a good month if not more. Need something decent to haul all my freaking ammo and still have room left over for things like a generator, ice chests, a pallet of MREs and some other essentials.

Hell, just for camping trips alone it would kick ass.

I'm Burt Gummer damn it!

I hear ya.....

Though I have a special place in my heart for Unimogs, they're a LOT more capable then 6x6s for most situations. Plus, there are some seriously awesome Unimog camper conversions that are prime for a bug-out truck. Check out http://www.unicat.net/en/intro.html if you want to think of how to spend your lottery money........

Unimogs are very capable vehicles in many areas, however if you want one consider this...you'll need new kidneys, lower spine, and possibly dental replacements if you ride in one much.

sure they'll go anywhere, and you can get attachments that will damn near do anything to go on them.....but i'd rather ride a buckboard down a railway line than ride in a "mog" again. Don't forget their high centered as hell too, gotta watch the turns.

that being said, other than those issue they are incredible machines.

Hehe, i'll get some pictures of my M977 rebuild project up once I get the faux armor plate (well, its not armor, its just cold rolled 1" steel, ALMOST armor) on it and painted. Having a hard time getting Allison to send me a HT740D transmission (gee, wonder why...) I might have to adapt to a different transmission, probabaly one from a Kennworth. Its transmission and engine were both destroyed by total abuse. And it was demilled; all armor was cut off, as were all gun mounts, glass was removed, and they didnt do a very loving job. They also accidentally cut the front axle and sliced through the front mounted hydraulic pump for steering and accesories. Oh well, I bought it as scrap, and expected alot of work. Shes pretty sexy looking now. Wont ever get it licensed for on road use though, most states dont recognize hydraulics as a highway legal steering system.

Those things are flipping gigantic. How much did you pay for it, and how do you have so much money to spend on all this stuff?

Chuckle they are pretty good vehicles, but they aren't _that_ big.
figure they are the intermediate step between a 5 ton, and a semi.

God bless the deuce and a half.

Damn fucking straight.

It's pure sex on wheels.

Question though, do the nutters still refer to the trucks as a Duce and a half even if it's a 5 ton? Cause to be honest, the 5 ton turbo diesel is what I actually am interested in most. Something that could allow me to hook a cable around some yuppie's H2 piece of shit and tow it down the street tumbling around like a rag doll.

I'd like to have 2 of them, one in desert sand color and one in olive drab. Have both set up to be a near go anywhere camping or bug out vehicle. Make a drive line upgrade here or there, put some of the biggest wenches I could possibly put on it front and rear. Tool box, welder, and generator.

I've seen a couple of people who own real mudders and off-road trucks having window graphics with "H2 Recovery Team" which cracks myself up a bit.

If I could ever afford a deuce or unimog camper conversion, I've already planned on getting a bumper sticker that says "My SUV has a crapper".

Not that i am aware of, the "duce" is still the 2 1/2, everyone always called the 5 tons, 5 tons.

hell i wouldnt mind finding a M151A2 someplace. sure they are small, but they'll go anywhere, and you can break damn near anything on it, and it'll still work.

we finished a border partol in germany in '85 with a broken alternator mount, tied it back in place with some lacing wire, and drove back in.

another time, a newbie driver twisted the rear driveshaft when he went to take off from being parked on a hill. out in in 4x4 and drove it back on the front shaft, but it was a bitch to steer that way.

yep, dueces are deuces, and 5 tons are 5 tons.

Stuff about deuces...God bless you uglygun.

Great minds do think alike. I've been wondering "what if" myself about buying one of these great trucks. Once you ride one, its like nothing else. I'm a huge off-roading fan, and I can tell you that these pigs can punch through a lot.

Coincidentally, I got my military driver's license to drive hummers and the 5-ton this summer during annual training. It was fucking awesome. Though, I think the 2-1/2 is alot more fun. I don't know why...maybe because its louder, or maybe because its stick shift.

Eitherway, both trucks are awesome pieces of equipment. The adjustable airpressure system on the 5-ton is pretty awesome.

God. If I was a major contractor for anything I would buy one of those! They would be great for hauling commerical/industrial sized air conditioners, logs, commercial/industrial sized transformers. It would be nasty for camping too. Think of the camping trailer you could tow with that baby! OOoh think of it in paintball. You could fit a lot of people in the back of that thing! I want one.

Well, given a chance, I'd get one of the older ones first, with a machine gun mount. I'd mount a decomissioned M2HB up there.

As an anecdote, capt. planet and I used to always joke about buying a 2 1/2 just to drive around town and generally attract a lot of attention, because our town is so small and it's mostly back roads. We always thought it was even funnier because he's so small, and he'd be driving this massive truck that everyone in the town would get to know him for.

deuce and a half's are big, but not THAT big....for offroading they still handle very well. Same with 5 ton's.....

Ironically I can drive a 5 ton but not a deuce.

Hell yeah!

Godamnit! Don't any of you remember First Blood where John rams though that police barrier with the deuce and a half and he still keeps on going like he just hit a speed bump?

THATS WHAT I'M TALKING 'BOUT!
