Well, I've had this problem for about a year now and I've posted a couple of threads about it but to recap:

MIDI doesn't work. THe OS that Dell put on the computer (XP Home) let me select two MIDI devices. SoundMax Digital Audio and Microsoft Wavetable Synth. Not only that but MIDI actually WORKED. I install XP Pro a year ago and now it only gives me the Microsoft Wavetable Synth and there's absolutely no sound whatsoever for MIDI playback. I'd reinstall XP Home if I could but Dell didn't send me a Windows disk.

So, I think I may have stumbled upon a fix or something but I can't really decipher it.

linkeh ('http://ntrack.com/wiki/index.php?title=I_can%27t_hear_MIDI_output_when_us ing_the_Microsoft_GS_Wavetable_SW_Synth')

That's the link. Don't mind the nTrack part. I don't have that. I was just googling my problem. I figure regardless of the program the query is about the solution will be the same/work. It says something about using a different output for MIDI playback but I've tested all the sound outputs this computer came with. Don't know what the glyphs meant but there was a cyan one, yellow, black, green (speakers), and pink (mic) and they all don't work with midi playback.

I've also kind of heard wind that you can just buy or download software for MIDI playback but I don't know much abotu that and something tells me it'll just be along the lines of WinAmp but for midi files.

PS - I use midi for PowerTab and Guitar Pro. le olde

This is my last effort in the problem. If this doesn't work then I'm going to forget about it and move on. thanks for any help you guys can help me with.

Kind of a stupid question but you didn't mention it. After installing XP Pro did you reinstall the Soundmax drivers for your onboard soundcard?

Yus. I surely did. First thing I do when I reinstall windows is get the sound working just because it usually gives me the biggest headaches.

Knew I forgot to mention something :p

Did you use the driver from Dell's driver page? (http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen) Sometimes even the exact same model of hardware will fail with the driver provided by the manufacturer, as Dell fucks with the stuff in their systems a lot.

Yep. That's where I got my SoundMax driver from. It's the most current (or the most current ones Dell released...can't get SoundMax drivers from their site).
