View Full Version : Hey look my wireless is being gay again WHAT A SURPRISE

My wireless connection just suddenly started getting 1000+ ping and lots of packet loss between my computer and my router and now whenever my wireless connection is enabled my CPU usage jumps from 0 to 70-80% when I'm not doing ANYTHING wtf (I tried going into safe mode with network support and killing every process until RPC was the only thing left, it was still at 70 even after I killed that and the process list was empty)
I guess I just need a new wireless card? :|

I think you need a new life.
Try removing the drivers, and the part, and see if that solves the CPU issue. If it does, then reinstall the drivers, then the part, and see if it still has the same issue.
If it does, then you're fucked :)

er.. I'm confused. RPC doesn't appear in the process list in task manager (svchost does though). Even if it did, I can't see how you'd know that CPU was at 70% load without having task manager open and seeing the CPU load on each thread?
P.S. System Idle Process is okay at being 99% :D
EDIT: As for the wireless router thingiemagic... IIRC you have issues with limited to no physical access to the router ? If can get to it, try unplugging the router, leaving it off for a minute or so then plugging it back in. Sometimes when I do this my pings for game servers go from 200-300ms down to 50ms.

I know cause I shut it down and the dialog box popped up that says "windows needs to restart cause some fag moron shut down the RPC service, SHUT DOWN IN 30 SECONDS K??" :)
If you go to the "performance" tab it displays overall CPU usage, silly :p It was at 70% with the processes list completely empty. Even with all my normal stuff running, only the idle process takes up any CPU with the card disabled, then once I enable it the CPU usage shoots up. Already tried reinstalling the drivers (I figured maybe one of them might've gotten corrupted cause for some reason we lost power twice a couple weeks ago, even though it worked fine both times after), maybe I'll get off my fat ass and try physically reinstalling the card in a different slot or something when I get home from my friend's tonight.

I'm 90% sure it's my computer/wireless card because my dad says he has no problems on his laptop, and I had no problems using my wired connection at CSJ's house. I used to have to unplug the router all the time because it would lock up when I used bittorrent, but this just started right in the middle of a BF2 game and I tried restarting it multiple times, to no avail. Nobody else seems to have any problems with this thing. In my current state my pings are anywhere from 2ms to 4000ms to a dropped packet.
Glock I do need a new life, I saw a sweet mid/late 80s camaro for sale on the way to CSJ's at just the right price for a decent condition RS, so I checked it out today and it was a fucking V6 auto  I hate my life

hmmm - check for the usual suspects... virus, worms, malware, etc. If the CPU is being pegged so high and nothing is appearing on the process list then I'd start suspecting a process that's been actively hidden from the task manager.
I wonder if someone else on here can recommend any system info software that could scan for "missing" processes?
EDIT: is anything being posted on the system event log ?

Also don't forget to test it with a boot CD if you can - that way you can consolidate whether it's a hardware or software problem. Often these problems can occur with wireless connections when one of your neighbors plugs in a cordless phone that spews out-of-range RF. In that case uninstall your neighbor's arms and legs, and you should be okay.

In that case uninstall your neighbor's arms and legs, and you should be okay. This is usually best accomplished with a chainsaw. FYI :kak:
A mid/late '80's Camaro is, IMO, a bad idea :/ At least you weren't so desperate that you bought the V6 auto shitbox though, GJ :) :kakhuggle:

Eh, they're not bad. The 2.8 is not a favourite of mine; it has a nasty habit of spinning it's crank bearings, but that's not a super-frequent occurance. I'd say get it, unless you can get a V8-powered car.

Are you sure there aren't other WLANs on the same channel or adjacent ones?
WLAN channels aren't clean, which means that they overlap so that for example WLAN on channel 3 causes collisions with WLANs on channels 1,2,4 and 5 -> Make sure the channel you are using, and the two channels next to it in both directions are free.

There's a firebird for sale but it's $4500 and not $1300, I figure I could just buy it now and put in a sweet engine later when I've got the cash...the body is in perfect condition from what I can tell, get on MSN sometime and advise me faggot
Mikko, my room is right in the middle of the house and seems to be in the perfect spot to be able to not pick up any other networks...my dad's laptop in his room can pick up my neighbor's network but I can't get anything, and it happened at like 5 in the morning so I don't think it's very likely that someone just set up a new network and that's waht broke me. At this point I'm pretty sure it's just my cheap card and I'll end up having to get another one :(

Unless it's an IROC-Z, of course :)

Go figure, it was my wireless card. I took my friend's card that he doesn't need anymore (albeit with no antenna so I'm using a coat hanger) and now it works fine.

I think it's your network card.
