when it's logging on, it basically freezes up, freezing most other programs (incl. task manager for a short period) and it wont go past the "connecting account: xxxx" box

Have you tried reinstalling?
If you don't want to redownload everything, I supposed you could copy or move everything out of the Steamapps folder to somewhere else and move it back after. (Or backup.)

its steam - of course it doesnt work
(yeah I know that wasnt particularly helpful, but just about the only things that ever work with steam are a) delete clientregistry.blob and b) complete reinstall and redownload)

STEAM refuses to work properly
Old news.
Anyways. Do you have a firewall enabled? Check the list of accesses to make sure it isnt being blocked from connecting.
Then there's always deleting the client.blob file for the hell of it.
If all else fails, backup your game content (copy all of it to another location) and uninstall steam, then reinstall it and see if the problem persists.

yes, delete your clientregistry.blob file and restart steam. If that doesn't work then try deleting your platform.gcf file and restart steam (make a backup first pls). If THAT doesn't work, copy your steamapps folder to another location and reinstall steam.

yeah I went with the reinstall option
seems theres a file in there that cant be read or found, even though it's right there in the base half-life folder
so thats all empty except for that one file in the sea of folders, i installed steam to a different directory and it works just fine

Oh here's your problem, you're using steam.
Blob file is best option.
Go into safe mode to delete the undeletable.
