View Full Version : Epoxy resin and computers...

So I have an aftermarket motherboard chip cooler, since the stock fan broke a long time ago, I bought one of those "no moving parts" coolers, it's a little spikey blue block thing.. and the way it attached to the mobo was pretty gay, and it kept falling off, so today I applied a tiny bit of epoxy resin around the chip, (not on it) and stuck the cooler to it... my computer is out of commission at the minute anyway, so I figured I have nothing to lose.

Anyway, has anyone ever done something like this before and will it blow up when I eventually turn it on again?

Doesn't sound too dangerous to me.

as long as its non-conductive (and it shouldn't be) then I don't think it will be a big deal?

Besides being impossible to remove without destroying the motherboard, there shouldn't be any problem. You did put thermal tape or heatsink compound under there too, right?

In the future, I'd just suggest getting a thermal adhesive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835100013). I believe they're epoxy based, but they're also heat conductive so you just put it right on the chip and forgo any sort of other compound.
