View Full Version : I'm worried about my CPU's temperature.

My computer has been locking up whenever I play games. I'm playing through F.E.A.R.'s SP right now and it hasn't locked up once, but it would sometime do it when I played CS:S. Some games like Titan Quest would lock up every time I played, there was no escape.
So I was like wtf lol? and Commie told me to download Motherboard Monitor 5 to check out temperatures.
MBM5 says my CPU is running at 80C. Now this is very fucking high and worrysome, but besides locking up occasionally my computer is fine. According to AMD's website, 85C is the lock-up temperature. So that means my CPU would reach 85C when I play some games.
I'm using the stock heatskin and fan. I didn't apply thermal paste at all.
I bought an Arctic Cooling Copper Silent 3 heatsink/fan combo and some Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste off eBay.
I wonder if this'll fix this problem?

That's your problem. You're sure there was no sticky pad on the heatsink? It's very unusual that it didn't come with either that or thermal paste.

Should fix it, and then some. Keep in mind that a solid block of metal probably cools better with thermal paste applied then the heat sink you have on now :p
Also; when applying the thermal paste, use some cardboard or other thick paper to make sure the paste is applied in an even, relatively thin coating.

:P
Sweet. I can't wait to get the stuff.

Have you tried cleaning any dust there might be out of the heatsink/fan?
Have you tried blowing on it?

Have you tried severing and boiling your own penis?

Do remember though that the Athlon XP's still ran hot as hell. I'd expect your core temperature to go down to maybe around 60C, 50C if you're lucky, and still spike to around 80C when you're playing games or doing something similarly processor intensive.

My friend's 2200+ is going fucking crazy. His heatsink just all of a sudden stopped being effective. We've swapped several heatsinks with a fresh coat of thermal (AS5) on each. It's still hitting 140F, and shutting down in XP.

Check for dust in the heatsink blades, make sure the fan is working correctly.
This goes for your graphics card as well.

ya, dust is a pretty big enemy. but for socket A's 80C isn't toooo bad for a LOAD temperature. bad for an idle temp tho

You probably had a thermal pad when you installed the stock heatsink/fan, that's why you didn't use paste. If you didn't have either, the system simply wouldn't run at all as there would be no way to transfer the heat from the CPU to the heatsink.
And remember kids, thermal paste > thermal tape/pad. :)
Artic Silver is damn good, ought to solve your problem in a jiffy. You also might want to look into getting some compressed air and using that to dust out the inside of your computer case from time to time.

You game freezes playing CS:S but not FEAR SP?
I'm not doubting what you're saying or anything but isn't that backwards in ideal conditions? F.E.A.R. uses alot of CPU power for thier AI in single-player and, as far as I've experienced, CS:S uses hardly any. I only get a max of 40% usage playing CS:S and I've peaked to 100% playing F.E.A.R. SP.
PS - CPU = P4 3.2 GHz w/ HT

I haven't played F.E.A.R. in a prolonged period of time yet, I did with CS:S though.
So I was like waiting for the mail and then we got the mail and my heatsink/fan didn't arrive so I pimp-slapped the mailman.

I received and installed the thermal paste and the new heatsink/fan.
Now instead of 80C, it says -114C.
...
At least it's colder. :)

Motherboard Monitor 5.
The sensor has to be fucked up.
I played for long periods of time of certain games that usually made my computer crash.
It doesn't happen anymore. D:
