I was checking pricing the other day on graphic cards for under 300
I found two pretty decent ones
a 6600gt oc with 512mb on it
or a 7600gt oc with 256mb on it
which, in theory, would be the better of the two?
-e- the 6600 was oc'ed to about 450-470, the 7600 500something

7600GT. It has features that the six series doesn't. Plus, it's gonna be faster. You aren't going to be using the 512MB buffer unless you play at 16x12+.

You COULD buy an X1900 XT. :o

Dude, for Sub $300, you could get something like a 6800Ultra/7900GT.
That's if you want...

less of wanting, more of hoping it would fit in my tower :(

Any paticular reason it wouldn't? 7600GTs are just now coming below the $150 price range.

My PCI-E 7600gt seemed to be a lot smaller than my old AGP 6800le, and required no external power.

yeah thats another problem as well, I'd need a new psu because the one I run now has *just* enough to run what I have in now

Ah. You might be better off just building a whole new system. What kind of CPU do you have now?

intel, single core, non oc, 2.8ghz
whuh?

the 7600gt is around the 6800 ultra and 7800gs(for agp only though) performance wise. But the 7600 is less power hungry than the 6600/6800 so that might be up your alley then. All the extra money you will save would be good to put towards a more complete upgrade later or just something else entirely.

I'd say to hold off and maybe either try and sell your current build and save up for something dual core (prices are dropping like kamikaze pilots in WWII) and get something (a CPU) with enough power not to bottleneck the video card, or the whole system.

eBay is best to catch the unsuspecting buyer, but I've had a lot success with craigslist, too.
