Hey I can't get BT to work here. Whenever I start up a torrent, the torrent stays black and then I get an error message that says problem connecting to tracker. I've tried disabling my firewall, tried multiple torrents, tried a whole range of ports and a few other things. Are there any specific ports I should be trying or other advice you may have? Thanks.

Probably need to do some port forwarding, which isn't going to happen on the uni's router unless they let you access it, or you can find an open port on it.

Is there any way i can sniff out an open port?

You could try a port scanner, though I imagine they've got it locked up nice and tight from the inside for this sort of reason. BT absolutely rapes your connection, lest you throttle it back.

my IT department isn't gonna freak out and come after me if they see me using a port scanner will they?

Not if you do it on your friend's machine. :D

I would guess they'd assume you have a worm and quarantine you, which isn't too horrible, though it can be a hassle (which you can also get around).

Do you know of a good port scanner to use and how I would go about configuring it?

Never used one myself so I can't help you there. Try Google.
But yeah, I wouldn't expect your network admin to take it very nicely. You might have to live without interweb for a while if they take it that seriously.

Wonder if it's just torrenting that you're limited to. Try LDC++ or DC++.
-edit- NM. It'll be the same. You have to port forward to use this program with any amount of goodness and you can't access your university's router so:
yer hooped :(

You're at college doofus, just find an on-campus DC++ hub and download at 10mb/sec instead of 10kb/sec.

agreed, unless the other people suck at fixing their settings and limit the bandwidth unintentionally.

Yeah, most colleges have torrent ports blocked or capped. You have to have an overwhelming amount of seeders to overcome the capped speeds. I had it working for my friends so that I would tunnel torrents through HTTP, but that takes a lot of effort.

yeah well unfortunately this is a small school comprised of people who are mostly comp noobs. There is no DC++ network available here to my knowledge -_- If there was, how would I find out?

Ask around. That's how I got our DC++ network ip, anyway.

good call on DC++, I searched about for a DC++ server but I couldn't find one at my college. I decided to start my own instead. I got a hub program and ran a server off my laptop. Already I've got 20 people configured and up on it, and I'm gonna send a campus wide facebook message tomorrow with an explaination on how to connect tomorrow :)

Try any random port above 20,000; you might get lucky and find one open, because most routers either don't bother to block that high, or can't block ports that high. It's how friends of mine have done it.

Maybe, who knows. But remember, make sure to set rules like "no leaching or you will be banned" etc. Don't want a bunch of noobs logging in just to take shit, or it won't grow.

I've got a 1 gig minimum share amount + a minimum of 2 update slots open to join the server and I don't allow people to hide their shared stuff :)

One guy on my campus network has 1.4 TB of shared stuff. When I saw it, I was like :dead:
