?? Building a PC for my mum. I have 1 GB of dual channel RAM and I can save her a bunch of money if I don't have to buy RAM.

I suppose so. It just won't work as dual channel, but single channel.

Judging by his post and previous topics about ram, I assumed he meant ddr ram and when he bought the 2 identical chips they said they were dual channel capable(or one 1gb chip with the same statement).

I don't think there's anything special about dual-channel RAM, other than that it's paired and costs a shitload. You should be fine.
