I'm switching over to Verizon FIOS soon, which unlike Comcast, currently has no monthly bandwidth cap. This gave me the idea of putting up my own small dedicated server for friends or just to have some control over my MP gaming experience.
I was wondering how much bandwidth it consumes per month anyway, just in case Verizon does add a cap. I'm also wondering how much instantaneous bandwidth (throughput, I guess) it consumes too. It'd probably be a 12 - 16 player source game or an 8-player OFP dedicated server that's running full-time.

IIRC for the hl1 engine, around 5-10k a sec per player slot reserved is a good idea. Looking at netgraph in source, I'd imagine 10-15k per slot would be reasonable per slot. So minimum would be 160k/s upload for a 16 player server. Minimum fios upload speed is 256KB/s so you should be good.
(also, I could estimate, but there really is no way of telling you exactly how much it will use. just imagine downloading at 160k/a second for 4 hours a day (assuming you got that much steady traffic with a full server) and multiply it by 30.)
From what I hear of FIOS, you shouldnt have an issue.

Apathy beat me to it on the tech stuff, but I've run a 16 player (WON) Firearms server out of my DSL. It worked fairly well, but it required some tweaking to get gameplay rolling nicely. I imagine it will probably be worse with Steam :meh:
