Yeah, I'm a linux newbie. What good sites / books / other resources can you suggest for me?

I'm using SuSE and Kubuntu, and although I've got marginally more experience with KDE (2 days vs none) all of the computers have GNOME on them if thats actually better

I'm also going to be using IRAF a lot

i find that for the specific distros, the forums have good information, for the most part...

i use ubuntu...and www.ubuntuforums.org is a pretty good resource

I'd suggest you just hit yourself with a brick right now and get it over with.

If you insist on continuing, http://www.slackersbible.org/

Really, I don't think he's asking what FaKToR thinks of Linux. I believe he asked how to learn it.

Because if he doesn't ask you by name you can't respond.

I've heard that linux is more of a hobby than anything else.

Did I say that? No. I said that MG did not ask for your opinion on the subject, he asked for the resources to aid with his learning of it.

I think my suggestion fits into the "other resources" category.

You know, I actually clicked on the title of this thread looking to see if FaKToR had decided to wade into a flame war of his own creation, and it looks like I was right.

Glad you could contribute to the discussion at hand, FaKToR.

However, as others have said, usually the forums for each major distro are a good place to start when looking for help/instructions/what-have-you.

One tip I picked up a while ago was that when searching through forums, especially vB forums, it sometimes works a load better to go to google and use the "site:<insert forum address here> [query goes here]" method. This way you get to use Google's search engine to search their forum database instead of vB's, which is slightly less capable in many situations.

I was (and still am) a big fan of Gentoo Linux (www.gentoo.org), and their forums are a huge monstrosity/repository of knowledge, mostly on Gentoo itself, but on everything else as well.

Good luck, and have fun reading :)

Actually Rob started it. I actually contributed, note the link to a somewhat helpful linux resource. Whereas Rob posted nothing helpful or relevant to this thread. He only attacked me, so if it went off topic take it up with him.

a) I didn't post anything helpful or relevant because I thought the resources posted were sufficient (and I learned Linux from a gigantic book that is now surely out of print);
b) I never attacked you, I simply pointed out this isn't the place for your unrequested and unwanted opinion. Personally, I found your statement ignorant and biased; but as I mentioned, this is not the place to discuss it.
c) My intent was to keep it on-topic; as your spewing of opinion encourages retaliation from many Linux users, such as myself.

That's odd, you criticized me for a comment that did not specifically address what he asked for:

That's a bit of a double standard. At least I attempted to be helpful.

So you get to decide if my opinion is wanted or not? Fuck you if I want to give my opinion while I'm helping I will. And I'd love to hear how my opinion could possibly be biased. It's like saying my preference for vanilla is biased. As for being ignorant, a lot of people, including many linux users, will tell you that it can be arduous to learn the OS and takes some time to really get used to as well as being the source of many headaches when you're just starting out.

You didn't keep it on topic at all. And no other nix user has rushed to criticize my "outrageous" statement. Face it Rob you were looking to start an argument. My comment was a warning so he knows what he was getting into, and then I proceeded to help. You just wanted to start shit which you've succeeded in doing.

You're entitled to your beliefs and conclusions, no matter how factually incorrect or asinine as they may be.

Again, let's keep this on topic, okay? Can you manage that?

now now children, shake hands and make up

anyway, I dont really have much choice in the matter (nor do I have a choice on distros, its SUSE on my workstation and Kubuntu on the server, and thats it), but I'm starting to pick bits up just from using the things

thanks to those who posted links, I'll take a look at them over the weekend

I don't suppose anyone knows anything about IRAF then?

Let's put it this way; FaKToR came in with his typical "Linux? LOL WHY BOTHER STUPID TARD!" hat on, and Rob_F came in with his typical "Way to fucking bash linux without helping TARD!" hat on.

Let's all take our hats off and talk, like gentlemen :).

Just be prepared to do a lot of reading, MG. Oh, and you might be able to find some help in various IRC channels on the freenode.net network, under the various distro names; that's where most of those channels tend to hang out, at least.

Depending on your distro of choice, there's #ubuntu, #gentoo, and many others. Also, there's always the good old basic #linux, where you can usually find help for just about any distro, in a general sense.

Another channel I recommend on the freenode IRC net is ##otw, it's like the OTF but more people and more pretensions at culture. It's an offshoot of the Off The Wall sub-forum of forums.gentoo.org.

Still plenty of flamewars though :)
