So, I fucking hate Sygate now, since it causes all kinds of errors whenever I try to disable my Internet connection. Can someone recommend me a firewall that (1) is free (not required, but would be nice), (2) isn't trial-based, and (3) isn't on the list in that sticky? The three that are listed in the sticky are either crappy or trial-based now, and I need one that I can keep for a while. I'll switch to Zone-Alarm for the time being, but I'd rather have something else if possible.

Zone Alarm does the job for me, but if you want a bit better solution, check out this package:

m0n0wall (http://m0n0.ch/wall/)

You'll need a spare PC with two NIC cards, but it's a very fast BSD-based router/firewall with web admin and some really spiffy features. You can get remote monitoring tools for it, configure QoS so you can play online games while torrenting, watch your bandwidth usage via a web-based live graph, and other cool stuff. That's what I use, and versus the Linksys WRT54G router it replaced, it's much quicker in terms of latency. The computer I use is an ordinary HP Vectra PIII 450 Mhz.

I want to get that Killer gaming NIC. That thing looks so hot, what with it's embedded linux system on the chip itself.

That's like a computer with a computer inside that is also a router :)

Agnitum's Outpost is a damn good firewall.

Zone Alarm pissed me off whenever it disabled the network due to a crash or something.

Yeah that could be a real pain in the ass. As I recall it also slowed the connection.
