A friend of mine's two year old Dell Inspiron 600m won't boot up properly. After taking a long, long time at the screen with the scrolling loading bar and the Windows XP logo it gives a blue screen error with the error code "STOP: C0000135" and says "Winsrv not found." I already tried booting into safe mode with networking to try and download a critical update that might fix it, but that didn't help either.

What's the next step? Boot into plain old safe mode, or should we go straight to the boot disc?

Had you recently done anything with SP2?

Thanks for the responses, but it looks like the problem was due to the HDD being damaged. My friend brought his laptop to our campus' tech support guys, and apparently the actual platter itself is flopping around inside the drive because of damage. The platter isn't being spun parallel to the rest of the drive like it should be, so the data on the inside of the platter closest to the spindle isn't able to read correctly.

How did this happen? His sound card started screwing up a few months back, and during that time his solution to fix it was to smack the computer near the audio jacks until the audio got better. Whoops.
