For a "if a deal sounds too good to be true it probably is"? Right now I'm looking for an external HD to back up my data, 200gigs+. I've not used price watch but a stop over there has external USB hard drives with storage up to 500gigs for 40 bucks. Of course they're not HD manufacturers with recognizable names, nor stores I'm familiar with.

Eh, I wouldn't trust a generic drive with that much data. Just like look around on eBay man, I bought a 400GB drive for $26, RMA'd it and got a brand new 750GB instead. Gotta love Seagate.

But seriously, MMD, you got so ripped off. Use eBay, it's much more effective than you may think.

Theres a little rule for life, you get precisely what you pay for.
I buy only from companies where I stand a 99% chance of getting a easy RMA or refund if it goes wrong.

Yep... I'll only buy from reputable locations that have an overwhelming positive review and I feel have a secure site. I'll actually re-consider buying from a company if I get to the shipping and credit card info stuff and it's not secure or the process/form seems a bit suspect.
While I'm looking for a great price, I'm more concerned with getting the best service, and not just getting flat-out ripped off.

Seagate has a five-year no hassle warranty. Newegg sells thier drive at pretty good prices and sell the drive with a full warranty. Best service.

God, newegg are gods, ususally they get my shit here the next day since a warehouse is right in NJ...
And if you ever have an issue, even if its just that you got the wrong part... no questions asked... they fucking rock.

Which also means you get to pay sales tax :D I have to admit I bought a PSU from them about a month ago. It was shipped from the NJ depot and arrived at my house the day after I place and order. This was without me paying for expedited order shipment and overnight delivery.

In your example ($40 for 500 gigs of external storage)... I'd make sure what you're looking at is an actual external drive and not simply an external enclosure supporting anywhere up to that generic number.
If it's an actual external drive... then yeah, I'd say it's too good to be true.
