View Full Version : Steam technical support (big problem)

I've been having this issue with Day of Defeat for a while, but since I wasn't playing it too much it didn't bother me. Now that I'm trying to get back into it, it's really frustrating.

System specs:
Athlon 1.8+
1GB PC-3200 RAM
Sapphire 9600SE 128MB AGP
Windows XP

Here's the lowdown:
Whenever I try to connect to some servers, as soon as I get to the the "Verifying Resources" part of the connection, Steam crashes right back to desktop. Now, it's not the maps that are causing it, since I can join some servers and can't join others using the same map. It's not models because I have all default.

I have tried uninstalling Steam, deleting the folder contents, and reinstalling. I have even tried a new Steam ID (worked even worse, I connected to ever fewer servers). When I did my year reformating, it even still happened then.

I've tried both the fs_lazy_precache 1 and precache 0 recommendations I found from someone else having the same problem (apparently a lot of people are experiencing it). So far, nothing has worked.

So, if anyone could help me out here, I'd really appreciate it.

Don't even waste your time with their "ask a question" thing. Does your computer have a good enough PSU for everything you have? I know when I was running a power hungry card on a Dell 250W psu...the card worked great...until it stopped working.

Yeah. 350W. I have more than enough power.

The strange thing is that Steam used to work fine. It's simply been for the last 6 or so months that this is happening.

Do you have internet explorer 7? Because many people (including me) couldnt play on servers that had a redirection on the server for faster file downloading. Even if you didnt need to dl the custom content from the redirection, steam would crash because of some IE 7 thingy.

Yeah, I have IE. But not all the servers I play on have redirection, but Steam does crash once it's Verifying Resources.

So, I'll just assume IE is the problem - what's the solution?

either DL the latest version (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx)
or rollback to IE 6.

I'll try it, hope it works.

EDIT:
I uninstalled IE and installed the latest version. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. Still getting Steam crashes at Verifying Resources.
