Which is more economical, having some company build it for me since it seems like they must be able to get discounts on parts, or constructing it myself?

Depends on where you get it from, and the deals you can get. Recently, I've been looking at making a computer via Newegg and iBuyPower.com. Both are very good, and I've ended up near same amounts. Some more, some less. Shipping and handling is what really makes or breaks the money deal for me. I'm also weighing the pros and cons of having a full-system warranty over having a bunch of different warranties to worry about. Although, I'm probably going to buy it off of Newegg.
Fucking DX10 cards need to hurry up and come out.

You wont have to worry about DX10 for years, and a GFX card becomes obsolete in a few years anyway, you really think many people are going to upgrade quickly?

I am ready to make the splash into DX10. I've considered buying a 1950XTX. Don't tempt me.

If you're not too concerned with warranties/RMAing, ebay is the way to go. You'll be able to build a rig that will be adequate for the next year or two or more(depending on your lust for DX10) for under $1000.
