So I bought a new laptop, and its got all kinds of cool shit on it, but I don't know how to connect to the internet (Yeah sounds pretty stupid). I've got broadband on this computer, and I'm trying to use the same connection for my laptop (I just switch where the wire goes). It doesn't work, and I feel like an idiot, how the fuck do I do it???

you should just be able to plug in the Cat5 and then run the connection wizard (tell it you connect through another computer if you have a router)
-e- start->control panel->network connections->new connection wizard

If the laptop has built in wifi, you may need to disable the wireless internet to get it working. I had a problem with a laptop at work that would sit for 15 minutes before the ethernet connection started working because it kept looking for a wireless connection. As soon as I disabled the wifi, the ethernet connection would start right away.

yeah, if it's cable it needs to pick up the new mac address

all of you people are stupid. You need to power cycle your cable/DSL modem to use it with your laptop.
What the hell does power cycle mean?

Basically, you turn the power for your cable/DSL modem off, wait for 30 seconds, turn it back on.

Power Cycle the modem?! Wak are you high? That has nothing to do with this.
As said above, try to disable your wireless network and make sure your LAN is enabled.

Could be a function key thing also... I dont work with laptops too often.
Go into your internet settings and make sure your proxy isn't enabled.

again, if it's a cable connection you may need to call your isp. dsl connections will pick the mac address automatically, cable not so much

My cable modem has no trouble switching between routers/nic cards whatever...
Do this-
Start->Settings->Network Connections and double click (or right click open) on the Network tab thingy
What connections are there, and are any of them disabled?

local area connection, 1394 conection, and wireless network connection. They're active, and I tried deactivating them too.

if you have a router, try setting a static IP

An option in your router settings... you can tell each computer to use an IP instead of depending on the router to hand them out.

Hmm... I shoulda thought of this earlier- Are you using a crossover cable? Some systems need to have a crossover between the NIC and modem, but there somtimes they dont. It's kinda wierd.

So I decided to become unlazy, and try to fix this again.
So my laptop has a connection, with IE it won't load any sites, but with iTunes (yeah I know), it can get the track names and shit for a new CD, so theres definitely a connection working.
I'm guessing I don't have a crossover cable, since I don't know what it is.

Okay, go to the run... menu under the start bar. Type cmd in the box and press enter to bring up a command prompt.
Make sure the cable is plugged in then at the prompt do:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

I tried that, didn't have any problems with it, but it still doesn't work. :(
