SWAT's thread got me curious..
how many people here have rations, tools and a plan in case of a natural disaster?

I probably have enough water, food, and propane to last at least a week and a half for everybody in the house.
Plenty of oil lamps and flashlights too (electricity goes out all the fucking time in Florida, fucking thunderstorms).
edit: If I we run out, I'll just drive to publix and put a brick through their window (fucking christ I hated working there).

I'm in college, they'll take care of me. Except in the event of nuclear fallout, at which point I'd be screwed.

I don't know what disaster I would have to prepare for. No danger from earthquakes, floods, etc where I live.

I'm in the Army, so I'll be taking care of everybody...plus probably have access to all the MREs I want.

Try tornados or a weeklong ice storm.

I'd be my screwed; I'm the guy who would end up eating his family for sustenance, and burning their entrails for heat. And when the meat was all gone, the neighbors... >:D
but yeah, seriously, i got nothin except a couple candles. we have a lot of canned food, but no can opener.

I'd go live with colon for safety.

Theres the canned food that we always have, no emergency stock as such, general camping equipment which includes a gas stove, that kind of thing. No large water supply though, pretty much the only stored water in the house would be in the toilet cistern. If I lived in an area that was disaster prone it'd be a different story, I'd have a SHTF-Kit with as much stuff as I would need to survive the aftermath of a disaster, with a lot of bottled water and rehydrate-able food stored. Theres alwayst the plan in case the Zombies attack, but that's a different matter.

absolutely nothing. however, i cant think of a single natural disaster i am at risk of, except maybe global warming. and i doubt that will creep up on me ;)
i live on a hill, miles away from water sources, in a temperate zone with no significant huricanes, volcanos or earthquakes, violent storms, storm surges or anything else i can think of. the worst natural disaster i can imagine would be having a few tiles blown off the roof.
the ONLY disaster i can think of befalling me would be to get blown up while on the tube in london, and thats a vanishingly small probability, which preparing for wouldnt help. oh or being nuked, and i cant see that happening any time soon either

ooh, i almost forgot.
i have a military-issue gasmask, and i still have my old uniforms. So if I wanted to I could dress up in my old BDUs to get through military checkpoints undetected. :)

I'd shoot scraps for safety :D (and possibly food ;))
But in all seriousness...unless I was able to raid price chopper and eckerd, I'd end up running into problems. I have pound after pound of pasta but nothing to keep a fire going with, only 10 rounds of #4 for my shotgun and like 400 rounds for my SKS...no way to keep water clean, very little canned food (a week at most). Depending on what happened, I would most likely have problems. Trying to build up a little bug-out bag or something just in case (and something that I can take camping), right now the spirit is willing but the wallet is weak :(

A good chunk of people aren't prepared for natural disasters, as shown by the hurricanes. I mean, the only two things I really have to worry about in my city are a tornado or boredom. The tornadoes never come into town. They tend to hit near the airport. I always keep a radio and a flashlight just in case, which is a lot more helpful than people think. Those're some things every person in Hurricane Hell should've bought. I also have some bandages, antibiotics, and medical tape accumulated from my family's many injuries.

It wouldn't hurt to have some supplies stashed.

i was walking around outside in that storm, aged 4. it really wasnt that bad, its just that noone expected it. broke the odd roof tile, and took down some trees. major problem was that there were no cleanup crews, because it was unexpected
oh and you missed the rather more pertinant example of the birmingham tornado this year

Nope. We have 3 test reactors near my house. I think only one of em is active...
Well, I suppose I do have to worry about Lawrence Livermore going all Black Mesa on me...
Shit, who am I kidding, I live a block from a graveyard and 2 blocks from a biotech firm, my ass is getting zombified.

speaking of disasters, is anyone on the eastern seaboard ready for a tidal wave (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5652141/)?

:D
I can say that personally I am not prepared for a natural disaster seeing as I am in an area where they do not occur. Since I am renting at the moment storage space is at a premium.

Well, that's always good to know.

There's really nothing I need to prepare for at home, plus I'd probably have to fight/ help with meh fellow marines if anything happened. If I'm at home and mass looting and pillaging breaks out, I got an AR-15 in my closet. Plus some steel toe boots to kick some heads in.
edit: I just realized I got my ka-bar hear, thats all I really need. ;)
i have a military-issue gasmask, and i still have my old uniforms. So if I wanted to I could dress up in my old BDUs to get through military checkpoints undetected. And a still current ID card, which would be checked?

There's one not too far away from here, but I'm not sure whether or not it's active. The area around here is a biotechnology hotbed though, so the potential for zombie madness is there.
The only thing I have that could count as emergency supplies would be heavy clothing and my ALICE pack. That's it. I've got an MP3 player that can tune into FM radio, but it's unreliable and runs off a rechargeable battery that only can be charged using a USB port.
Only thing I could really do is round up my friends, stick together, and stay away from densely populated areas to avoid the looters. The university can barely handle keeping our buildings in good shape, so I seriously doubt their ability to effectively handle thousands of frantic students. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, holding out until the Navy and Marine Corps restore order would most likely be the best option for me.

Not really, but if any sort of natural disaster were to happen, itd be better for it to happen while my sisters are at college and my dad is at work. My dad would eitehr not be able to come home, or stuck at work attending to various fire department related activites. That would allow what meager supplies of canned food we have to last much longer.
Icestorms and blizzards are easy on me, we see them coming, have standbys in quarters(more calls expected, too dangerous and slow to respond from home). There we have generators and heat. Probably have food somehow, but I dont really know.
overall i'm poorly prepared.

I have no rations or anything of that sort right now, but that's because I live in a dorm. Back home, my parents have stockpiled around 20 gallons of drinking water, then there's the pantry full of canned goods, and the 7k rounds of 7.62 in the basement :D
