View Full Version : What constitutes an epic thread?

This actually pertains to the OTF, but it's sort of a serious discussion in and of itself, so I'm putting it here.
Throughout the history of the OTF (FA and WaW), we've had many epic threads: Geaorgwashingmachine, Chewy Chewy Cocoa Puffs, various girl threads, and so on. But what exactly is it that makes the thread epic? While the word itself has been thrown around quite a bit in the last few weeks, very few of them will actually live on in our memories as epic.
The Geaorgwashingmachine thread was originally about some guy sexing his girlfriend and was pretty stupid in and of itself, but became epic upon Afro's comment. The Pat Tillman thread similarly became epic when Lucky decided to make an ass of himself with his comments (and made a horrible blunder of backing off in the meantime).
Chewy Chewy Cocoa Puffs needed no outside assistance, and is famous purely for the original post by Towelie. Same thing applies to How FA is Really Meant to be Played by Shrike, or BattleWhack's mailbox thread.
In my opinion thus far, they've been largely spontaneous events that didn't really have any previous planning. Not exactly something that can be recreated easily, but interesting nonetheless. To that effect, what threads here in WaW would you consider to be truly epic? It's not an easy question to answer, since the forums are barely a year and a half old, but there have been occasions where something truly epic has been posted.

We've only had a couple of girl threads that were epic. We just say the other ones are epic as part of the joke.

Girl thread = image spam from my part, and that can help the epicness by exciting people into posting other stupid shit.

I wouldn't expect many more. I don't think the Tillman, Chewy Chewy Coco Puffs, or Georgewashingmachine (sex) or possibly mailbox bashing (illegal activities) would be allowed.

I'm pretty sure I use epic as a form of irony, to point out how spectacularly not-epic the thread actually is.

All you sociology majors out there-- don't let this thesis topic pass you by

I'm gonna go for a simple explanation and say that an epic thread is just one in which a lot of posters have a lot of fun. A thread that only involves a few people, or isn't much fun for most people, cannot be epic; but if it meets my criterion it's good enough to count.

Dinosaur vs 40 lions (yeah you're probably all tired of hearing that one)
I had no involvement in it (I think I was banned) and I'm tired of it.

I didn't really think it was that funny outside of a few posts, mostly I was thinking "wow what kind of moron would actually vote for the lions"

I'd vote for the Trex vs 40 lions being an epic one. It sure was long enough, and I lol'ed enough times. But then again, I'm not very picky.

if you've ever seen any 'epic' ytmnd's you'll see there's 2 train of throughts for them. One being something that is truely epic, while the other is something stupid or ordinary but is called epic to be ironic and funny. I think the same thing can be applied to the forums lately.

what's so funny about calling something epic that isn't

THIS. THREAD. IS.
EPIC
Funny, see?
Seriously though, does this really deserve it's own "serious" thread? An epic thread is just an epic way of saying that a thread is funny...

For a thread to be Epic it has to have four things
1. A Hook (duh!) Either a great story, or a great concept.
2. Complete randomness (fuck I hate the over use of that word). Someone who is on their own tangent but still on topic making things interesting for people taking it seriously.
3. Someone who's trying to be serious, arguing with the jokers. There's always one, I bet in the Chewy Chewy Coca Puffs thread there would've been someone crying their little eyes out about someone needing serious help.
4. A fight. Someone has to argue over something.

randomness (fuck I hate the over use of that word).
Blame emos, I swear it's one of their little buzzwords that often leads to many other buzzwords like "rad" and "bicurious."

It annoys me that it should be a good word to use to describe things that are actually random, but now when cunts say everything is random it makes me want to destroy worlds.

I think a thread can easily become epic, as long as you don't try to say it before hand or "force" it. That gets annoying after awhile.

Well its easier to just define epic, honestly some of those threads you mentioned I wouldn't consider epic just memorable or well known.
The first and major part of being epic is its long, or atleast indepth.
The second major part is its involving/engaging. Like when you get lost in a song or put yourself "in" the movie or story. The drums are going a million miles an hour, the people are racing, and you simply just want to be involved.
Its something extrodinary. Its not simply two dudes fucking a melon, its the gay man on fruit orgy story of the century. Its not just a man sticking a coke bottle in his ass its CHEW CHEW COCO PUFFS! The story basicly has a life of its own and its just awesome in most every respect.
By those characteristics (theres probably afew others) some of those threads like georgewashingmachine is NOT epic, simply memorable and funny. While other threads we probably don't remember at all or vaglue remember are indeed FUCKING EPIC!
Then again I consider myself one of those epic nazis that really hates how the word is being misused, specially recently. Epic is something to revere like a god or rachel leigh cook. Its not just some random adjective to thrown around as you will.
