So, like most of the people who posted in the thread on the old forums, I thought the first episode was pretty meh, but I actually really liked the 2nd episode (Premiered last night). Anyone else watch it? The roadblock scenes were pretty tense.

I read in the newspaper that the second and third episodes were better. Though, I'm not sure what an Iraqi War Veteran would say to it all.

The third episode looks good, the guy who played Sgt. Randleman in Band of Brothers is some sort of Special Forces/Delta soldier. He was holding a tricked out 1911 to some insurgents head in the preview...

I watched it yesterday. I thought if it wasn't accurate at all, then it was pretty entertaining.

last nights one was scary, when that one soldier went to check that car with the girl in it, and she was moving her lips and looking at the guy but when he went to get her , the back of her head was blown off, that was pretty trippy, gave me chills

I watched episode 2 tonight. I changed my mind. The shittyness of episode 1 must have been because it was a pilot, and all pilot episodes suck.
I was a HUGE fan of the second episode. it hit home in a lot of ways, especially where the FNG arab from detroit hears the cell phone in the trunk, and the driver starts going and he just shoots him from right there in the window. They managed to get that scene 100% right.
Only thing I didn't like is how "moralistic" the one dude was about killing.....you're just not like that in the infantry or you're transferred out.
BTW I like the SSG squad leader.....they obviously put a lot of though into his character before giving him a ranger tab. He shows ranger leadership.

yeah it was really good, i was wondering though, dont laugh at me for being moronic lol, but do they write these episodes based on pieces of stories or events that took place there? or do they totaly just write these creativly?

Quite a few sandbox veterans hang out at Subguns, and to a man they've pretty much pissed all over it so far.

Probably a combination of both.
Somehow the more I think over it, there are a lot of realism things lacking (taking a convoy of trucks out just to set up a 6 person checkpoint in the middle of nowhere, without briefing BEFORE they get there? uh...no.), and the knife fight thing going on there, and the characters seem WAY too dramatic and not soldierly enough. The only two who seem realistic are Nassiri and the Sgt.
Although I really like how they made the female driver a total fuckup.....

where do most of the insurgents come from anyway?? Syria, Saudi?
Also about the first episode, it shows a insurgent being blown in two by a M203 direct hit, is that realistic?

Depends where you're at. On the eastern side of the country you get more iranians. On the western side, more syrians. I think if I was to put an arbitrary percentage on it, and this is PURELY speculation, it's like 40% syrian, 30-45% Iraqi and the rest other.

Like most here, I was turned away by the first episode. (The one part where they are moving closer to the mosque at night really bugged me. They stood up, 2-3 feet from each other, walking slowly, with no SAWs or other support weapons ready to suppress the enemy if they start firing. Am I right or just a moron with his tactics wrong?) I caught some of the second episode but not enough to make a judgement. I'll probably watch it this weekend that's usually when they replay it.

Probably a combination of both.
I think so. I read a book a couple of months ago called "Generation Kill" written by a reporter embedded with a group of Recon Marines. The book details their experiences before and while they are in Iraq. The shooting incident with the girl in "Over There" is lifted for the most part intact out of the book. The book describes the girl's injuries as being able to see her trachea from the top of her head. A key difference in the book was that they were using M2s with tracers to fire warning shots, and the incident inspired the group of Recon Marines to start using M203s to fire colored smoke in front of the cars instead.

m2's? did you mean m4?

If I remember right, they were using the M2s mounted on their Humvees just to fire the tracers and they lit up the car with everything else they had. It's been a while since I read the book though, so take it with a grain of salt until we get some verification.

"Over There" vs. "Over There and Here" rolleyes
I'd much rather see what life is like over there for the troops, or at least an entertaining fictional account.

The first episode sucked pretty hard, made it seem like they just wanted to capitalize on the media-publicity war and bleed some hearts in the process. And it does that throughout all its home-front sub plots that suck immensely. I came in expecting something Band of Brothers caliber and was just completely underwhelmed.
But the later episodes are getting better. Yesterday I watched the one with the shower scene (is that 3?), and it was actually pretty good... except for both the home front plots. Something's wrong when 60% of the show doesn't focus on Iraq at all...
And for those who haven't seen it, don't bother reading this next part.... when the AWOL soldier loses her money and eats the meal from the diner, I'm sitting there thinking "okay, a soldier who's on leave from Iraq doesn't have any money and for the most part just stole a meal because they were hungry. no one in their right mind is going to call the cops on her..." and for the ten seconds or so the show kinda pauses on a dime and I'm thinking "he's going to do it..." but then it doesn't and I smiled :D

1st - meet the characters - crappy
2nd - roadblock duty - good
3rd - fireteam meets the Spec Ops guy - good
4th - fireteam has to find and kill a mortar spotter - okay
5th - pt1 embedded reporter films the fireteam, looks like "smoke" killed a woman and child - okay
6th - pt2 fireteam attempts to rescue the now kidnapped reporter - okay
7th - fireteam guards in a prison camp - good
8th - fireteam oversee engineers trying to make a village decide what to build -okay

You're right; they should be 5-10m apart, not 2-3 feet. Probably 5m at night, so you can see your fireteam.
