View Full Version : Post Editing

I got this idea from Facebook. Now, on facebook comment posts, there is a certain time window for editing a new comment. I thought that this concept could be good for threaded conversations(more useful for the firebox) if it doesn't require extra coding. I find myself going back and editing a lot(too much). Sometimes so much that what someone else quotes is no longer what is written. I think that an editing time window is a good way to keep threads more on topic and arguments clearer. Let me know if it's just me.

uh, you already have an editing time window - it's as long as it takes the next person to read the thread
if you're consistently finding yourself needing to make corrections, use the preview button

Meh, I do use the preview button, I guess this is just my thing though and not something the mods to be concerned about

uh, you already have an editing time window - it's as long as it takes the next person to read the thread While that makes sense, it's actually two minutes before it shows an "edited by" and posts can always be re-edited.
Noir, are you asking for a time limit on post editing after which the post can no longer be edited?

what I *think* he's asking for is a delay between submitting the post and it actually showing up on the thread, so he can edit it before it becomes publically viewable. bad idea imo (and I'm pretty sure Facebook has it only because their database is horrendously slow and not deliberately)

I think he is saying that there is a time limit of how long you can edit a comment. After that time limit is reached, you can no longer edit that comment.

Ok, noir: you need to re-explain what you're asking for then.

Sorry for the lack of clarity.

I'm not asking for a delay inbetween when you post and when it becomes viewable, only a limit to the amount of time which you have to edit a post, say fifteen mins, an hour, a day, etc. It probably won't matter for the OTF but probably will help for Advice, the Firebox, and Tech Support.

That sounds like a good idea. If you need to edit after an hour... it should probly be deleted.

It shouldn't affect housekeeping threads too much as you can just delete and re-post them(it's probably not a bad idea to give those things a once-over before additions anyway.)

It might be, that's why I'm not a mod

I prefer being able to edit a post whenever I need to. This applies more so for longer threads where the original poster updates the original post to correspond to what's happened so far in the thread.

Yeah that would suck balls for people like me who go to write a post and then forget half of what they wanted to say, then remember it 5 minutes later or when they're about to go to bed or whatever.
