I'm looking to play Luther Perkins'/Bob Wootten (Lead Guitar of the Tennessee Three) style, with steel strings. I was thinking of a Fender Jazzmaster or something like that. Any thoughts?

Legendary Fender rockabilly sounds:
----- "I Walk The Line" by Johnny Cash (rec. April 2, 1956 at Sun Studio, Memphis)
Luther Perkins played a 1955 Fender Esquire through a Fender Champ amp.

http://www.the-jime.dk/Rockabilly_Guitar.htm

there are claims on the fender forums that he played a telecaster though.
I picked up a '67 blonde with maple capped neck in '71. Mainly because it looked like the guitar Luther Perkins played behind Cash.
Hi,
I just was informed by one visitor of my pages that Johnny Cash's guitarist Luther Perkins did play Jazzmasters and was given one of the first JMs by Fender.
So I guess flatwounds and a Jazzmaster would do well. :-)

here's a pic of his Jazzmaster http://www.talentondisplay.com/lutherTHINsm.JPG

and discussed here http://www.fenderforum.com/forum.html?db=&topic_number=468788

I'd guess he used all of the above and then some more - it's unlikely a working musician would have stuck exclusively to one guitar or make.

Yeah, it's pretty rare to see any guitarist only use a certain model, unless they've got an endorsement deal that requires it (even then there will be marked differences between all the guitars of the same model that they use).

The Jazzmaster would be a good place to start though.

Yeah that looks pretty sweet if you like your straps trying to pull your guitar at odd angles :(

I've got a mate with one of those and I found it no different in any way from a normal guitar, just a little easier to play athestically.

I've never tried a jazzmaster. When I get some money I'd like to experiment beyond the Ibanez I've been using for 2 years now, a mahogany humbucker setup. Flying V's look kinda cool, but when I tried to set down with one it kept sliding, and I'm not entirely sure the guitar would give me what I'm looking for in terms of jazz either.

But yeah, as PK said, if you're looking for a twangy sound like what Luther Perkins had, you can also consider a Telecaster. My friend has one of the higher end models and for that sound, the thing does damn well. Doesn't sound too bad distorted either.

thanks guys. Your knowledge is a little better than mine in terms of music, so any other advice you may have, please, throw it my way! ;)

Get a bass and learn slap technique, way more bad ass than guitar.

Well christ, for that much you can pretty much get whatever you want :o If you're just testing the waters, I'd recommend the jazzmaster or telecaster the sound you want, along with maybe a fender twin reverb amp. Shouldn't run you more than 1500 aussie dollars or so, even if you buy everything new from the store (I'd grab it all from ebay for cheap but if you don't know what you're doing a used tube amp may be more than you bargined for in terms of trouble).

holy christ, don't even get me started on lefties. i looked FOREVER for a decent lefty but i couldnt find one. i ended up ebaying a lefty american strat with a maple fretboard. the middle pickup tone-knob rerouted to work on the bridge pickup. it came with gfs vintage alnico staggered pickups. i replaced the bridge with a stacked humbucker, dimarzio tonezone, but kept the other two for when i want to play really mellow bluesy stuff.

the guitar only ended up costing me about 650 plus shipping shit. awesome deal, it just took fuckin forever to find.

I'm left handed and I play left-handed guitars. It's great because other people don't mess around with your guitars. It's not too hard to find left handed guitars, and the quality is generally high - having taken the time to retool, the manufacturer generally makes sure they get it right. They cost about 10% more but that's okay as left handed people tend to be more intelligent and therefore have better jobs.

Playing left handed guitar is like finding beautiful women who enjoy my company - really easy.

What happened to the good old days when left handed people were beaten?
