I've never played most of those games, and those I have I disagree with. how can you say that the russian segment of call of duty gets you into the action quick, when you have to sit crouched on the boat for ages? and it's 2/3 of the way through the game anyway! and the half-life intro wasn't boring, it was an innovative and immersive introduction to the game world.

He's talking about the beginning of Call of Duty 2, which was very quick and took less than five minutes to get through before the action started. It was great opening for an even greater game.

It got old pretty quickly. :/

I think those maxims are very well put. I agree with almost all of them.

1: I do agree with you on the HL2. Some of the specific examples that the writer gives are a bit off target, but it's the maxims in a more general sense I agree with. Also, when EvErY game starts off like that it becomes tedious.
2: You're thinking CoD1. In CoD2 you start off in the russian campaign first. And you start as a guy learing to shoot your rifle in a improvised target gallery, when, Uh-oh! A bunch of germans are a comin'! so you have to, with just a minute of training, go out and shoot german soldiers. (Just to expand on what MG23 typed)

The fact that any of the red faction games failed to make it as an example proves the suckitude of the author and his distaste for awesome games.

Dunzor, I love you, but Red Faction 2 was a fucking abortion of a game.
First one was pretty cool.

Failing this, the immortality or immediate mortality of allies or enemies that hinges upon whether the player is present makes the player useless as a hero; they are relegated to the role of mute witness.
Example: F.E.A.R. The Point Man has the amazing ability to be one room over or one second too late when anyone that can help him is in danger.I'd add Red Faction in there as well. All, and I do mean ALL, of your fellow miners are there as cannon fodder. NONE of them can be made to follow you, like in HL and HL2. NONE of them survive unless you make a VERY concerted effort to protect them, and if they do, they stand in place, because they were meant to die. That was one of the biggest disappointments about that game. You had (supposedly) hordes of fellow miners arming themselves and fighting back, and yet you were still on your own.

I honestly really enjoyed it, the gameplay was solid and the story wasn't horrible... well not that horrible.
FFS he could have used it as a bad example or something :(
Also both red factions would have been a better example of the ramping into the story then some shitty ww2 shooter.
