View Full Version : If there was one old game you could have remade...

...with a modern engine (eg. source, or the crysis engine), what would it be?
I'd probably shit my pants if someone ever redid System Shock 2 with all our modern graphical marvels. Like, actually shit my pants in fear because that game was pretty fucking scary even with graphics that were outdated at the time. I'm playing through it again right now with all the graphical update mods that are out and it gives me the willies d:D

Thanks for being the only other person ever to play that game. I use to play it all the time on my dad's old Power Mac.
I'd remake Marathon 2.
Captain Colon

Marathon would be pretty badass too, would you make it more atmospheric (like doom 3 compared to the predecessors) or just keep with the original run-n-gun type gameplay?
neko
March 2nd, 2007, 07:44 AM
I'd make it a little more atmospheric, but chances are it'd still retain it's run-n-gun gameplay. It'd be a remake rather than a revisioning

My oldschool gaming knowledge only goes as far back as early 286 systems with EGA monitors and Atari consoles. I missed out on all the tape-loading systems as a function of being too young, which I guess goes for the rest of us.

Aw man I shouldn't joke about that shit like that, I <3 you kak :kak:
Being about 1/3 of the way through my current SS2 re-playthrough, I've decided it should never be remade on a modern engine because people would probably die of shock and fear and awe and dehydration due to never-ending semen production. It'd be like what Doom 3 would've been like if it had like 10% of the ammo it did and the "OH SHIT MONSTER COMING OUT OF A DARK CORNER" thing never got old.

Good points, more tactical flexability would likely be cool. Though a bunch more weapons and such is hardly a graphics/engine update ;)

You know, I'm not sure what engine to pick for a refurbish. Noone that I can think of have managed to do what they did with lightning and weak spots to the bodies.
But they really screwed multiplayer over and the lack of scripted sequences and allies get to you after a while. And no mods at all. Someone should redo it just so you could be some commander sitting in an APC while directing his marines, be it against aliens or predators. And how they made AVP2 without the original's coop mode is a crime towards gaming.

In a way, no. I like the idea of a Star Wars game where you arent a jedi, and there is more pure FPS gameplay, tactical more than mystical I guess.
That being said, I really, really liked Republic Commando. (The multifunction blaster reminded me of the Johnny7 from ZPC, which was a weird, quirky, disturbing game that I loved to no end.)
Not that the Jedi Knight games werent great, and Kyle Katarn isnt a good jedi character (he's no Corran Horn. I, Jedi for the fucking WIN.), just the jedi game is a bit played out.

I think if TIE Fighter proved one thing to me, it's that I'm a sucker for in-game rewards. All those pins, badges, ribbons, and ranks kept me hooked on that game for years. This also explains why I'm so heavily addicted to Battlefield 2 and 2142 despite each game's glaring technical problems and bugs.

The game's unmoddable, isn't it?
I've seen people managing do some light white-hat hacking, helping the player to choose what race they are in-game. Even if it had to be done from scratch, people did build the AVP level prEditor. Not many people bothered to do much about it and the expansion proved a disappointment. I wouldn't know about the game being unmoddable or unworkable. I'm not too sure, but from memory, Fox is said to have a very pro-active stand on modding. It brings in money - through lawsuits.
If the story is true, the policy was implemented some years before the success of both AVP and HL.
IMO, AVP was restricted from above because of Hollywood style producers in Fox. Both when it comes to modding and when it comes to multiplayer, using it as nothing but a base to draw advertising shares from. Battle.net's advertising banner is a pretty reasonable little ad, but these ads were flash videos back in the days before broadband, PIII and 256 meg ramchips reached the wider market.
Sorry for getting all wordy about this. I just have a lot of issues with so much good getting wasted.
