View Full Version : Favorite game weapons/units

What are your favorite video game weapons? I use "weapon" very broadly to include units from strategy games, aircraft, mechs, etc. You get the idea.

These weapons stand out to me, in no particular order:

G36E from Firearms: close-quarters scoping FTW.

1911 from Firearms: pewpewpew, more games should have fire-as-fast-as-you-click semiauto weapons.

What the hell, every other weapon from Firearms: I don't know how the FA team did it, but they gave every weapon its own feel and personality, in a way I haven't seen in any shooter since. I went through a phase with every gun (OK, the Beretta 92FS phase didn't last very long-- but still :p). FA's art community helped extend their lifetimes.

MP5 from Counter-Strike pre-1.0: I used to stick with this weapon even when M4s (and later, AK-47s when they were introduced) were available. Fun to snipe with.

M16A2 from Operation Flashpoint. OFP was the first game I ever played that simulated bullet drop and iron sights. Lots of fun.

Demoman's grenade launcher from Team Fortress Classic. Led to a unique and bizarre playstyle.

Crowbar / combat knife from Deus Ex: I played through a whole game using just these weapons. Satisfying challenge. The riot prod and mini-crossbow get honorable mention as well.

ASMD from Unreal: There hasn't been a better railgun-thingy since, IMO.

Cougar from Mechwarrior 4: I loved zipping around, sniping with LRMs and lasers while everyone else drove a laserboating Daishi.

And probably my favorite weapon, the Witchwild String (http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/exceptional/ubows.shtml) (WWS) from Diablo 2. Cheap, crazy fun, effective bow with an awesome name that you could build your whole Amazon around. And most of all, creative. In my mind, this weapon is the standard for creativity when I look at equipment in other RPGs. I've tried to match the WWS experience in other games, but nothing I know of comes close to Diablo 2 in its diversity of equipment and resulting playstyles. I might reinstall the game just to start another witchyzon (my account expired a long time ago :().

As much as I hate the game, the nukes in Starcraft were so fun. I would spend entire games just maxing out my pop with nothing but a bunch of SCVs and one or two dropships full of ghosts, then nuking the shit out of everything.

Then I'd hunt down whatever shitty builder they had left trying to rebuild and kill it 4 teh win >:D

So many choices...

From FA:
M-14
M-4 w/ Silencer (especially fun for sewer crawling in Durandal)
M-82
Dragunov

From MW4:
Mauler (really really slow, but nothing beats carrying dual Clan Gauss or LB-20X AC)
Awesome (three ER PCCs firing simultaneously FTW)

And since you mentioned units:

From Starcraft:
Dark Templar (DT rush FTW)
Reaver
Lurker
Observer

From RA2:
Chrono Ivan
SEAL
V3 Rocket
Dreadnought

Might as well sort by game :p

Firearms:
M14: I loved the semi-autoness and the optic. Gave the advantages of accurate, long ranged fire without the specialization of a sniper rifle.

G3A3: My love before the M14, and still used in tighter conditions where the full auto gives it an edge over the 14. Also has a certain coolness to it, as it was never really considered an 'uBaR gUnZ' like the FA-MAS.

PKM: What can I say, I'm a camper :D The ability to go semi and pop that helmet sticking up was very nice, especially on certain maps. I just wish I could have gotten that HK21 model I wanted for it :(

Everything else: I'll hafta concur with Disco here. Each weapon had its own unique feel, and was fun to play with. I can only hope that more modern games (like that Alliance game, which fullfills my dream of including pretty much everything from the turn of the century on) took something from FA.

CS:S
M4A1: With a self-respecting model and self-respecting animations, this thing is good fun. Useful firepower up close, and good accuracy at range. Almost too popular though.

Shotgun: A good model and sound go a long way towards making this thing fun. The default sounds were downright embarasing (sounded more like a percussion instrument than a weapon).

Naval Ops
Guns!: Even with all the fancy railguns and gatling cannons and lazorz, good old fasioned naval artillery is still quite fun.

VLS Missiles+Aegis System: It's Macross Missile Massacre, but with ships! Whats not to love :D

Navy Field
5"/38 Mk38: Good RoF, respectable damage for a DD gun, and useful in anti-air. Good fun on an Atlanta or Timmerman.

Eve Online
250mm Light Artillery Cannon II: Good range, good tracking, good firepower, and I can strap 7 to a well tanked Thrasher.

Ace Combat 5
A-10: Nothin quite like unzipping things with the big gun ;) I think the only thing that stopped me from killing Arkbird with the A-10 is it cant fly upside down :(

Thats all I feel like posting about now. Might add more in the future.

Sig P2340 - .357sig love
Arctic Warfare AW50 - combined with a recon unit, you could kill the opposing players through every wall in a map.

Desert Combat:
M82A1 - I loved using this on the oilrig map

Warhammer 40k DoW: Squiggoth ^_^

Orc get stomped in the early game unless you base defend, and have a decent midgame, but once the armor rolls out Orks get shafted. Until the squiggy comes out.

Squiggy is so powerful he counts as a hero. He owns infantry and tanks in the face. He can be easily kited but with proper support, Squiggy rapes all. He sports like 6k HP (or 8, dont feel like opening DoW now) and a rather large amount of guns on him, along with a bite attack, stomp and charge.

Plus hes really fun to use in a LAN. Something wonderfully exhuberant about screaming "SQUIGGOTH! RAWR SQUIGGOTH!" when it finally comes out, and your friends going "....fuck."

Starcraft: Valkyries running over the basedefences and taking out the overlords, followed up/supported by ghosts making housecalls. Great fun against the cpu and zerg. Terran are better in broodwar IMO. Something about those medics healing people on stims. They have a chance at surviving now - on drugs!

DOD: I love using a stable MG position. You need just the right opponents to pull it off - the experienced ones know how to handle you. Funniest moments have been when everyone was new to the map and noone expected to be gunned down from that specific direction.

FA: Due to laggy connection and sucky playstyle, I oft resorted to artillery weapons. Much fun. (Come to think of it, you know what DOD seriously lacks and FA had? Trenches.)

BAssilisks are fun. Especially when you have a triple cap mod and have 8 of them. Nothing says fun as having your men shout "SHATTER THEIR SKY" and have 8 barrels of hell rain hell down on your opponents far out of their reach.

DnD fireballs are a thing of awesomasity

Planetside, Vanguard (its also a perfect example of how tanks should be implemented in more games).
Planetside, Skyguard

Shattered Galaxy, Falcons

Heroes of might and magic 5, peasents... There are few things greater then massing up enough peasents to just roam around one shotting groups of demons, angels, grand wizards, and so on with a bunch of random inbread farmers with pitchforks.

G3A3 and G36 from Firearms. The Sterling also get's a nod for pure amazingness.

I love the Needler, no matter how bad it sucks, if you can pepper someone well, that neon pink explosion just screams out you got raped.

Lightning from Mario Kart, I mean, who didn't hate getting hit by it and love using it.

Spell wise, clearly the Frost Orb from D2.

Other honourable fave's, The Chicago Typewrite from RE4, good damage, infinte ammo, no reloading, what's not to love?!

I don't know if you can consider this a weapon now, the ball from Katamari Damacy, I mean, it picked up people right? So technically, hot damn that game was fun.

Other honourable fave's, The Chicago Typewrite from RE4, good damage, infinte ammo, no reloading, what's not to love?!...the fact that it was a cheesy, I-win button that made the game boring? :p Infinite ammo with out even needing to reload makes for no real need to make your shots count, the high damage means it doesnt even have the coolness of the 'chaingun cha-cha', it cant be customized at all, and it has virtually no disadvantages. I'd have much rather seen it with half the damage (or less), requiring ammuntion, and availible during the normal game (even if later on).

I was also disappointed that the kickass assault rifle on the rack wasnt in the game :(

More weapony goodness:

Resident Evil 4
TMP: Most people talk down about this thing, but I found it a very fun weapon. I get more success knocking heads off with it, and its just plain fun to riddle your opponents with bullets. Plus it helps you save those shotgun shells for when you really need em ;) Just dont leave home without the stock.

Rifle (both): Sniping was definitely fun. The add-on scopes didnt seem that helpful though (besides making the SL8 look less fugly).

Riot Gun: Not quite as UBAR as the streetsweeper, but more fun ;) The better range/tighter spread was cool, and the look was awesome.

Parasite Eve 2
M4A1: A very handy weapon, offering pretty much the best range in the game. Works nice as a stand alone early on, and the bayonet, stungun, flamethrower, grenade and laser attachments keep it useful straight to the endgame. Only real downside is it can get costly to keep it fed, and it's not very good in close combat (at least without the bayo/stungun/flamer :fier: )

Pretty much everything else: PE2 had a very nice selection of weapons. Everything had a niche, and different weapons worked better for different playstyles. Even the bonus weapons had their faults, complementing the other weapons instead of supplanting them (though the Gunblade is the best shotgun in the game, even without its special abilities).

I'll just go with my IRL also then. :D I like playing that way, everything is a personal preference at the end of the day, and nothing is definitively right or wrong.

One other classic:

The Crowbar: You just can't beat the originality here, albeit I suppose it does remind us of the chainsaw from Doom. I mean who wasn't in shits of fear and laughter killing that first headcrab with this thing?

Makai Goblin

FPS's: (Far too many to mention all, but here's a few that I tend to think of first)
The bigass Cannon from Serious sam1/2 You goitta love a gun that can mow down rows of enemy fodder!

The Flamethrower from RTCW:ET It's the ultimate annoyance weapon. Plus if FF os off it's good for weeding out those disguised enemy covert ops. :fier:

The Shock Rifle from UT2k4/3 It's a rail gun, it's a plasma-ball shooter, it's a huge-ass explosion-maker! IT'S ALL OF THE ABOVE!

The flack cannon from the Unreal universe: It's a combo shotgun and grenade launcher. You gotta love it!

FA's AK47: It was the best "basic assault weapon". Good damage, resonable accuracy, didn't zip through it's mag too quick, no bells and whistles to deal with (Just a simple pointy thing)

DN3d's shrink ray: Gotta love stepping on your opponets! And the bloody footprints doing that left! :D

DooM1/2's plasma gun: I just love the sound it makes when you shoot it off. Based on sound alone, D3's plasma gun sounded even whimpyer that the "typewriter gone berserk" sound the assault rifle-like weapon made (Not calling that thing a machine gun, even though the game itself did. Something that small is NOT an MG)

RPG's:

Masamune from FF1: It's just sad that you only got it for 1 boss battle (the last one) 'cause it did a major boost to attack. In fact, I gave it to my red mage insted of my fighter, because it made him slightly more powerful than the fighter using excalibur (IMO, 2 very good whompin' doods > 1 uber whompin' dood.)

Yoshitsuna from Disgaea: Imagine a sword that could kill jesus with a reach of twice that of a spear, that looks like a honkin' lightsaber.

Other:

Spread gun from Contra: Whee! it shoot all over!

Shotgun from Metal slug: *BOOM* it's dead.

Freeze gun from Metroid: My enemy, MY staircase!

OPF: UKF's LSW, STT Scoped AKSU, FDF's AGS-17.
Traveller: Gauss Rifle, Snub Pistol (Auto, HEAP).
NWN: Rapier and shortsword.

Ahem... What's Vollmer? I can't remember any weapon model in FA, what been done by this Ingeneer.

My list. Steyr AUG. Everywhere, where it exist and not a BS weapon/game.
FA. AK-47, M4/M16, G36 or SVD:). This weapons are favorites in other games, if they are there. But depends on their quality:). BTW, miss Akimbo in their spray and laugh style in our jobs FA parties.
SWAT4. Benelli Nova, P-90.
OFP. French pack. Orcs weapon pack (except sounds), especially VAL and SVD. Some weapons from FDF (like their recoil). Earl and Suchey Marines pack. Best AK-74 firing sound ever heard (ingame/movie).
JA2/JA2 Wildfire. Try to guess who:). AUG/C7/M4.
Fallout (1-2). Revolver, Sniper rifle, .223 pistol, turboplasma rifle (in F1 only). Also like combat shotgun, but it's too heavy for a loner with only 150 Lb available:).

Favourite vehicles-
OPF T-80 - forget the guns, just run people over.

Like we both play same style:).
If talk about OFP, I like Kawa dirt-bike, very fast, agile and good grip. Sometimes able to destroy a house with it, without been killed by this crash (tested on Everon, near Meaux, if went south from airport by middle road (closer to western road)).
Also, I like Lancia Stratos. Too funny to control. Remind some rallie games, when you try to turn on high speed. Like use it for fast travels from Everon airport to southern lighthouse.
OFrP pack good to, all packs good:).
BW mod EC-135.
FDF 1.3 F-18. A lone plane you not able to land. Extream:).

Fire Arms: The 1911, m82, and the remmington were pretty fucking sweet.

Quake II: The railgun with no. fucking. doubt. about it.

Half-Life and Half-Life 2: The snarks were great, as well as the RPG. The gravity guns and crowbar (shotgun too) in HL2 are pretty amazing as well.

Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries: Gauss rifles, Cauldron-Borns, LBX 10's, and Bushwackers fucking rock.

EVE-Online: Megathron, Ishkur, Deimos (even if it's too expensive to use for PVPing, it's still a sexy ship). Neutron blaster II's of all sizes and T2 heavy drones are quite the pwn as well.

Homeworld 2: Wings upon wings of interceptors and bombers were so much fun because they were so cheap and built so fast. You could just keep pumping them out like crazy and swarm bigger capital ships and stuff (killing their turrets and all that).

Starcraft: Hydralisks and dragoons have to be my favorite units...that is until the dragoons get stuck on each other and shit D:

Total Annihilation: Morty...FTW! Multiple Krogoths wrecked house too.

Diablo I&II: I liked all the character types and weapons and stuff because they all fit nicely. I could make any kind of character and be content with it really.

Warcraft II: Peons and peasants obviously. And those fuckers that cast death and decay.

More to come when I remember more ;o

Edit:
Operation Flashpoint: Obviously the LAW. Shooting tanks and shit with it is fun, but when you sit there knocking choppers and planes out of the sky the fun just never ends. OFP is such an awesome game because of all the stupid shit that happens in it. Phalanx units in RTW.

Lord Kelvin
March 11th, 2007, 09:40 PM
Eh, phalanxes were pretty much only good for holding infy in place and killing cavalry charges. Anybody with two or more cavalry units and half a brain could pick apart a phalanx.

Now attack dogs, those are awesome units.

.223 pistol, fallout 2.

Seconded. I always thought of that thing as the "kneecapper-eyegouger 2000." I would specifically ignore the main storyline and run around New Reno until I found one, and then after that I would run around random encounters and critical everything I saw. Only time I ended up replacing it was when I got the gauss pistol, and even then I would keep the .223 in my inventory in case I ran into lower-tier enemies.

Dwin
March 12th, 2007, 12:40 AM
And anybody with half a brain would also know how to defend one's own phalanx just as easily. That's what the game's all about.

In my (limited) experience, if you have even numbers, no amount of force (missile units are worthless against them, unless your entire army consists of archers) can punch through them. And if you're a situation where you can't get around (phalanx circle), then I can't think of anything you can do.

One exception would be siege weapons, but then like I said, a smart player would make sure he has cavalry to deal with those kind of threats.

You beat phalanx formations with sword or axe infantry at the sides. Most phalanx can't turn fast enough without exposing it's other side, so they have to make a decision whether to break formation with the rest of the army or get flanked. Calvary aren't good for this since they get picked off very quickly, but sword/axe infantry can close in and hack away at the flank without suffering the spear penalty. This also forces the phalax troops to use their sidearms, which usually isn't anywhere near as good as the sword or axe weapons.

What about an unflankable formation, as previously mentioned?

marty
March 12th, 2007, 02:29 AM
You mentioned the caveat: army of archers

I always made at least one or two full stacks of horse archers :D

If you made a ring of phalanx (which the AI isn't smart enough to do), it's still vulnerable because there IS a rear to penetrate (think three dimensionally), and the raised pikes only protect the front.

That they're light cavalry means that nobody can catch them. I can choose to fight or not to fight.

That's what I loved about them

The problem is that the goddamn engine doesn't recognize an ordered withdrawal, so if I end the battle when I want to run away, half my guys arbitrarily die and it's considered a "loss".

HarryB
March 12th, 2007, 02:41 AM
What about an unflankable formation, as previously mentioned?

There is no formation in the game that isn't flankable. There are, however, areas that prevent people from being flanked. Like Marty said, if the person puts all his phalanx in a circle, then shoot them in the back. If you don't have any archers, pick a point and have them all attack that point. Troops on the other side of the circle can't help those being overwhelmed. Heavy infantry should run in first, followed by light infantry to break through. If you can split one of the phalanx, then it's game over since the other ones won't be able to hold their position and will be flanked.

I would specifically ignore the main storyline and run around New Reno until I found one, and then after that I would run around random encounters and critical everything I saw. Only time I ended up replacing it was when I got the gauss pistol, and even then I would keep the .223 in my inventory in case I ran into lower-tier enemies.
I always liked the .44 revolver the best. You get it early, ammo is cheap, and did I mention you can empty the entire cylinder in a single round with the fast shot (whatever it was called) perk and two in action boy? I do not believe I did, but you can. Once you get the sniper trait with that thing the game is pretty much over.

Don't forget the speedloader! The .44 was another favorite of mine, but I think the .223 pistol wins for me because it's a cutdown rifle and a reference to Blade Runner.

I liked the Mauser and the FN FAL even though they weren't all that great, but finding ammo for either was always a pain.

Yeah all the 7.62mm stuff kinda sucked a lot more than it should've

Man, that revolver makes me want to play fallout 2 again just to make people explode with it. I made like 5 different types of characters but always got bored cause they couldn't make people explode like my revolver specialist could D:

You mentioned the caveat: army of archers

I always made at least one or two full stacks of horse archers :D

Can a single archer unit even take out a single phalanx, from behind? I don't know, I usually don't get the chance to take out an entire unit with them before the fighting starts.

In any case, I'd make sure I have cavalry to chase em around and waste some of their arrows on.

Okay, here's a part of the game mechanic I don't understand. Is swarming, say 10 units into a spot more effective than sending in just one or two units in? Because, as I would imagine in the real world, it doesnt matter how many guys you've got in there, if the area of contact between the two enemies is the same.

Either way, yes, I imagine the phalanx under pressure would eventually buckle, in which case I could bring up phalanxes that are not in the circle to fill in the gap.

I won that one, but to be fair, the enemy consisted only of lower-level spearmen. But I guess one of my soldiers didn't think it was gonna work:

The Shiltrom from M2:TW is unflankable :)

But very vulnerable to archers.

Dwin, it might depend on your unit size setting

I usually play with whatever is the largest. It makes missile weapons quite lethal. In M2:TW, it's even worse with the mounted gunners

Oh man.

Longbows from M2TW (except the Sherwood archers)
Janisarry Heavy Infantry/Musketeers
Turkish horse archers
Noble knights

RTW:
Companion Cavalry
Germanic Phalanx plus the Chosen Axemen to swarm in once the phalanx guys were fighting.
And Cataphracts. They are so awesome.

Ya, I play on largest battle size. I tried it, and indeed they are quite lethal from behind.

Okay, I got a new one: MAP CORNER PHALANX. Arrange your phalanxes at the corner of the map. That way, there is absolutely no way you can get flanked unless you move, and missile units cannot attack you from anywhere but the front.

edit: Oh yeah, AOEII: Longbowmen.

Oh dear god, I use the map corner phalanx as well.

Actually, it's the only phalanx tactic that I can use (I'm pretty incompetent with phalanxes -- too slow for my tastes).

It seems most phalanx users are pretty good with keeping down their losses, because the formation is about attrition and not decisive action (usually maneuver). Not me though. Even with corner phalanx, I manage to lose half my guys. I'm always impetuous and take the first "opportunity" to flank my opponent, and it's usually just a feint or trap on his part.

That's why I like light cavalry so much. Losses are high, no matter what (unless its horse archers), but they're so... decisive. I get screwed by heavy cavalry a lot, even when I have a sizable reserve of spearmen for my horsemen to fall back to. That's okay, I don't lose by THAT much, and I rarely encounter a stack with "too many" heavy horse anyway. I've even pulled off upset wins from time to time (I love forests and hills)

OMFG it g00

More like I played terran which got completely boned in brood war

I think we must have Colon V Marty starcraft battle...

BAssilisks are fun. Especially when you have a triple cap mod and have 8 of them. Nothing says fun as having your men shout "SHATTER THEIR SKY" and have 8 barrels of hell rain hell down on your opponents far out of their reach.
try them in the board game...things can shoot almost anywhere on most boards, and can vape entire units...ridiculousness

and for myself?:
Starcraft: Hydralisks, without a doubt they are amazing
Diablo2: necromancers, with the white wand
Halo1: the pistol, duh (also plasma pistol)
Halo2: the battle rifle, duh (also plasma pistol)
MGS3: mossin nagat
Okami: Beads, the best ones forget the name
doom: shotgun
etc

It was the H&K MC-51B, a 5.56mm SMG with a 50 round mag. It wasn't in FA for very long - possibly it was removed in 1.2 but I'm not sure.

Hmm, I never heard that Vollmer create that one MC...
But whatever, I know that gun. I like it too:).

I love the helos from the OFrP pack - they look fantastic.

Other packs too. But air was good. I like Jaguar. IMHO it's single cons - no "iron sight" ("iron HUD?":)), like Mirage got. Plus Leclerc (I know it's tank) - ability to show down hovering choppers - it's really pain in ass.

Yeah all the 7.62mm stuff kinda sucked a lot more than it should've

Agreed. I really want to see Enclaver's faces, when my 5-10-2-2-10-10-10(8+2) (Gifted+Finesse, 3 more criticals, sniper, Bonus Rate of Fire, action boy and night vision) char came to Navarro with two .44 speed magnums and then went to their oil rig... And what's I really want to see - Franky face, when I got 3 100+HP criticals per turn, while he even can't raise after my first shot in a... well, call it "leg":). 250% of Small guns and Sneak. "Beats me"((C)Myron).
IMHO only "Louisville slagger" ultimate killer game was more thrilling and funny.
Or Jinxed with 1 luck too. wield anything except sledge or slagger - leathally to you:).
