Um...The Trenches...or something like that?

It's about the Somme...don't quite remember if there were any scenes excessive gore or not, there was actually little or no action in it.

The only ones I can think of right now are The Lost Battalion (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0287535/) and Flyboys (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0454824/)

Part of Legends of the Fall (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110322/) is set during WWI, it even has a mustard gas scene

A Very Long Engagement (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0344510/) also has some scene from the trenches during WWI

Shit, I was gonna say that.

You could also watch "Joyeux Noel." I enjoyed it. Besides that I don't think there is much representation of the trenches that isn't excessively gory or "All's Quiet on the Western Front."

A very long engagement is a very good romantic war film, but it would be seen as gory. The first five minutes contain some different ways of self-mutilation that any would-be coward would find interesting. The sigarette trick gets an "A".

If you have access to it, say at a library, World War 1 in Colour (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0481303/#comment) has many different documentaries. It is digitally colored over old footage, giving it the feel of old postcards. It also avoids gore, but is still somewhat gritty. I believe it covers a lot of issue, even if it avoids the worst of the trench warfare.

Most documentaries on the last reigining Tsars make a good look into what went on in Russia at the time.

Another to consider...The Blue Max.

"You know... there's something of the Cobra in you... I'll have to watch you..."

BTW I second The Blue Max. Not very gory, but pretty good movie about WWI aviation.

The Lost Battalion is something I would watch again. I forget how gory it was, though.

Beats the hell out of Fly Boys.

I saw Lost Battalion twice in high school and both times it was awesome to the max. I recommend it highly and well basically so does everyone else in this thread. Also major props for the whole "I took the test" scene. Gets me every time.
