I need a new jacket, preferably a raincoat of some kind. I'm also curious about oilskin coats. Any advice on the matter would be appreciated.

Berghaus are good. Their Paclites are nice and weigh very little. If you plan to do much walking in hostile weather I'd recommend something a bit longer than the usual jacket - it makes a huge difference if it comes down far enough to cover your arse and it gives you something to sit on. At least in the UK the jackets in huntin/shootin/fishin shops are less hideous than the ones in outdoor pursuits shops.

Most hill farmers I've met wear Barbour waxed jackets - and they should know. Perfect for any weather, with plenty of pockets for sandwiches, hip flask, ammo and the occasional dead animal. A Barbour jacket will last the rest of your life, and most of the next generation too.

Oilskins keep you warm and very dry, but they weigh a fuck-ton and are kinda impractical, in my experience. Then again, I'm talking about full-length saddle-covering dusters here.

I like goretex. Light, reasonably breathable, readily available in outdoorsy-type stores.
