Played a bit. It's a mix between Fallout, Operation Flashpoint, and Oblivion. The AI for people is pretty good. They'll hide or run when they're outgunned and rush when they're not. Though they'll sometimes walk into radioactive areas for no apparent reason.
I like how the game is always moving. Different factions will raid each other and animals will try to eat each other. There was one time where I heard gunfire so I went to investigate and found Stalkers fighting bandits. Helped the stalkers, and when the fight was done, I went around and picked the bodies for ammo and stuff. In one of the rooms though, I found two bandits bent backwards into a flaming barrel and there was a stalker sitting by it playing the guitar.

sounds cool. Is it worth the wait for delays? Or should it have came out 2 years ago

I don't really know. There are some parts from what I've played where things look like they make logical sense. Like stalkers held up in a factory when all of a sudden a handful of bandits attack.
But then there are parts where the game ramps up the difficulty really fucking fast for no reason. Like in the second area there is a junkyard where some stalkers are stationed. Bandits will sometimes walk over there and pick fights with the stalkers but usually it's only one or two. Well there's a mission where you have to walk up the road to meet with someone at a train stations. No more than 2 minutes up the road from the junkyard was a pile of rubble with 3 bandits patrolling around it. After they spotted me, I ran back to the junkyard for help. All of a sudden the 3 bandits turned into 12 and started massacring everyone. Every time I killed someone I had to take their gun because I was always running out of ammo.
In terms of immersion, every character (ally or enemy) has a name, and some have PDAs that you can upload and find their stashes hidden through out the area. Also, when you start bleeding you have bandage yourself. You have to take anti radiation drugs or drink alcohol to cleanse radiation poisoning. You have to eat or you start getting tired faster. You can drink energy drinks to combat fatigue. It feels pretty real.
My only real beef with the game right now is that it takes forever to get around since the areas are so big, and bandits and mutants spawn to quickly, so you're usually out of ammo for your bigger guns.

You shouldn't be running out of ammo after the garbage or so, really. I have like 800 rounds between my .45 and 9x39 pistols and my AR, you just have to be obsessive about looting, and buy all the ammo and food you can from traders whenever you get to them. As far as running, you'll get some artifacts soon that give you more stamina, mine recharges whenever I'm not sprinting now.
I thought the game started out kinda slow and really frustrating, but once you get the AK-74 (not the -SU) and some decent armor and artifacts it gets a lot more fun. Bloodsuckers are scary as hell, especially when they jump in your fucking face while you're trying to kill some bandits.

Wtf I'm at this part where you're under a research facility and you have to look for some guy's hidden room. After you get in, you have to fight your way out. But you can't go the way you came, you have to go through the only other exit to complete the mission. Now the problem is, once you step into the hallway where the exit is, some mutant guy who can warp your brain attacks you. You can't kill it because everytime you try to shoot at it, it does some psychic attack that fucks up your vision. If you run for the exit and leave, you come up in military base where you're immediately spotted and shot at. Fuck this game in the ass.

I just charged up to that faggot mutant and unloaded both barrels in his face.
The part after you get up out of there is ridiculously gay and hard, the best way to do it is to just shoot one guy to set off the alarm, then go hide in a house and let them come in one by one. Takes a while though cause there's like 20 guys.
I hear the multiplayer is just generic deathmatch and CTF.
HarryB

Pretty much, sort of like counterstrike, except it's like OFP where half the time you don't know where you're getting shot from.
Also, I have no idea how to change your name in multiplayer.

Tried it again, killed the mutant this time. But the only guns I have on me is my AK-74, Viper 5, and pistol. So when I run for a house, I always run out of ammo. And I never have enough time to scavenge some off dead soldiers. Fuck this game in the ass.

You must be talking about something else. Because the only people in the tunnels are soldiers and bandits at the start, and they always travel in groups.
I hate how this game will just spontaneously make the situation unbelievably hard. I mean, I'm playing it on novice. I'd hate to see how it plays on hard.

Argh, I wish this game had an auto save every 5 minutes or something- trying to remember to quick save is annoying. And when quests are impossible to complete (The guy who I turn it into died...) they don't clear. I've also had some other jobs that are stuck on the map, and stashes that don't exist.
Pltcl Sniper

There's a door at the trader in Cordon, but there shouldn't be any doors leading into the bar at the Duty town. The guard behind the counter will keep saying that until you go all way down the stairs and leave his sight.
As for the artifacts, it's almost impossible to run out of money in this game, so I don't bother keeping artifacts unless it's something I can use. And generally the only ones I keep are ones that boost endurance and radiation defense.

I'm at that part where you're in the underground tunnel and you have to find info about Strelok in his hide out. Where is the info?
After you go down the ladder, you enter a room with bandits in it. After you wipe them out, go towards the back of the room where the spiral staircase is. Go down to the bottom and you'll see the bubbling anomolies. Walk around them and you'll enter a long stretch with pipes. At the end is a bloodsucker, but you can ignore it unless you decide to stand right next to it.
Half way down this stretch is a doorway that leads into a hallway. In the hallway are 6 soldiers. After you clear them out, you'll notice that the hallway has a door at one end, and a door halfway down the other. Going through either will lead you into a hallway with large pipes. Follow the pipes until you see a latch with a ladder leading up. Go up the ladder and you'll go into a room with beds and shelves. This is the stash room. On the shielf by the door you'll find an upgraded AK-74 and Strelok's flashdrive.
Once you have both, leave the room the same way you came in. Go back to the long hallway and head to the very end. There's a door there that leads to a cramped winding hallway. There are another 6 gaurds or so in here. Take them out and walk to the very end. You'll get to a door that leads to another long hallway that heads to the right. After you step into this hallway, you'll see a ladder leading up to the surface. If you walk 10 feet from the door, a Controller will come through the door behind you and will try to clusterfuck your brain. The best way to kill him is to walk backwards towards the ladder, until he walks in and then run straight at him. This way, even if he disorients you, you can still blow him away with whatever gun you have. After you kill him, walk towards the ladder and you'll finish the mission.
Now, from Streloks stash, you learn the guard patrol for the base above you. I said fuck that, and stormed the base from the front door, which I thought was easier.

I couldn't put this game down until I beat it... thank god it's spring break. I only procrastinated an astronomy project I'm gonna have to bullshit anyways so I suppose it's not a big loss.
Anyways... beating the game didn't make me want to quit, as I received one of the bad endings (out of 5). So now, as soon as I finish that project, it's back to binging on this game. I'm still a little ticked that with a gig of ram and a Geforce 7600 with 256 mb, I can't play this game with any dynamic lighting.
Spoiler on my ending just in case.
Go figure, my character in all his brilliance says; I want to be rich. Coins fall from the ceiling (or so it seems) and then it cuts to your character looking up in awe at an empty room about to collapse upon him. He dies. The end. God I hope I don't have to save mole in order to get a better ending, mole just ran off to say hi to the soldiers at apogrom and just f'ing died.

I used my ancient skills that I had honed against Doom 2's Arch-Viles. All you have to do is to keep out of the mutant's field of vision, peek, shoot, hide again.
I have to disagree on the game's AI: I had no trouble wasting the soldiers in the research facility after exiting the tunnels.

So I have a new problem. Duty hates my guts. And of course, a good chunk of the games story needs the barkeep in 100 rads... Having a massive pitched battle every time I need to get in there is rather annoying. I've already killed everyone, they just respawn after a few days. So, is there anyway I can smooth out my relationship with them? Or was killing their general dude a step too far... Hell, I cant even talk to the barkeep since the guards in there try to kill me too!

Other people are saying that they have like 2 assault rifles and a pistol + ammo and med kits. How is this possible? Getting another AK-74 puts me above 50. From what I heard the exoskeleton suit lets you hold 70kg.
Also, if you are low on ammo, pick up weapons and in the items menu right click them and click "Unload" to take their ammo and then just drop them. I have about 300 5.54x39 rounds from doing this.

Do you not have any food or anti-radiation things? Because I have this vodka and these anti-rad needles or something, along with bread.
And I have 1000+ pistol rounds :/ I think I'll just stash them somewhere.

I carry a G3, a Viper 5, and a pistol. Usually I have over 40 medkits and 50 bandages. I also usually have 10 or so anti-rad and bread. Usually have about 200 pistol rounds, about 400 boxes of ammo for both the viper and the g3, and some for the AK-74 if I run out and need a weapon fast. Usually I top out at around 58kg. With three endurance artifacts though, I don't run out steam and can usually get where ever I want to go.

Yeah I just found 2 really good endurance artifacts so I should be fine for a while. I also got the Duty suit.
Right now I just got the key from Borov or whoever and I am going into the lab. The first thing I heard was very gigantic footsteps so I saved my game and decided to take a break.

that changes a lil later on threw the game, once you get your hands on the
P99, it gets better, all i used on the zombies was the P99 and USP .45 with Hydrashock rounds, alot eaiser nailing those zombies in the head, because they take a shit ton of rounds to the chest with out dieing.

The ONLY way to use the early pistols is to either low crouch and go for the head, or just sprint up and unload into their head. The Big Ben you get on the way to X18 is pretty awesome though.
Damn I should play this right now.
BTW, how the fuck do you put scopes on guns? I've tried double-clicking the scope, dragging it on the gun, dragging it on the gun while it was in my hand, and pressing all the firemode/ammo keys a billion times, nothing seems to work.

And for the scope I got for the Obikan or whatever it's called I just right click the scope and click "attach to gun" or whatever and it goes on there. I haven't use the scope though because I haven't been outside lately.

Did you install the right one? Some file download sites aren't so good about labeling which one is which. From what I can tell, there's three versions: one for the US version, one for the "worldwide" version (the international version I guess), and one for the Direct Download version.
Captain Colon
March 28th, 2007, 05:57 AM
You can't install the wrong one, it'll say you've got the wrong version and to download the right patch.
As for the 3x damage mod, it's pretty fun, though getting nailed by stray bullets is frustating as hell in the beginning (once you get some stone blood artifacts and the chunk of meat it's not as bad). Also, guys you have to protect die as easily as you and enemies, so think about that if you're planning on trying it. You'll be reloading a lot but IMO it's a lot more intense when you have to actually use cover.

From what I've seen, it runs a LOT better on older hardware that doesn't support the DX9 shaders. If you're having stability issues, try changing the lighting setting to static lighting, it still looks good but it'll run a lot faster and should be more stable.

Strelok's lair is fun so far. I froze when I heard the mutant growl, and I must have sat in place for a good minute trying to figure out where it was. Thankfully, four soldiers popped in and showed me just where he was hiding. I didn't expect the damned Hidden of all things to pop up!
On a non-spoiler note, I'm currently carrying way too much weight. I had to ditch a whole bunch of stuff back in Strelok's lair. Is there any place besides the trader in the noob camp I can sell extra weapons and armor to?

Nice how the guys at the end drop an F2000 and Gauss rifle. The VERY last guy I had to kill dropped an f2000...wow. Now I can go use it on the inanimate rubble :D!!

Are there any traders in the Dark Valley or Bar areas? It's becoming a royal pain to have to make a trip to the noob camp every time I get some new loot. Kind of takes the thrill out of "Sweet, I just picked up 5 almost-mint condition AK-74s" because it's followed by "Ah crap, now I have to run through all of Garbage and Cordon."

True. The traders rarely have anything unique for sale.
For those who have trouble carrying all the stuff - be sure to pawn off any extra artifacts to stalkers you meet on the field. Those things weigh half a kilo. Also it appears that whatever you place in the stash boxes, never gets stolen/lost. So forget about any fancy setups, an assault rifle (and maybe a sidearm) will suffice for adventuring. Stockpile the rest, so you'll have fresh weapons and ammo when your current boomstick starts to wear out. And once you start getting some good armor (like those heavier biohazard suits), you can survive massive firefights with only a handful of medikits.

That's exactly what I'm doing now :D I've got a large stockpile in Garbage where Bes and his group hang out, that junkyard with all the burned out buses and Hinds. I beat the game, finally. Took my an hour longer than I expected because of all the extra combat it takes to get one of the two "real" endings. Hence to say, they're both a bit morally ambiguous... rather just one is.
Anyways, I will say this much, find guide, find doc; only then do you have any hope of getting these endings. I'm not gonna post what the real secret is as I know someone will still open the spoiler tags despite their best interests.

Get the realism mod off stalker files if you want a harder game...the shit you pick up is practically worthless to sell, you'll make most of your money off quests, artifacts and selling expensive armor suits you find. It also changes the traders' inventories so they sell things that are actually useful (eg. the noob trader sells an AK74 but good luck affording it, you can if you sell EVERYTHING you have). It also makes the damage a lot more realistic.
Also, I found the drum-fed grenade launcher :D I'm way overloaded and can't decide what to drop to carry it around though :(

Just hover the cursor on the map. It's down and to the right from where it says "army warehouses" or something. Or to put it other way, it's on the right side of the road that leads from the Duty town to the Red Forest (orwhatitsname).

The game gets that much more fun when you finally do. As soon as you can head out to the Dark Valley and help out the Duty guy who wants to rescue his friend from the bandits, he'll give you a PSO-1 scope you can attach to an AK-74 or Obokan.
The rifles don't become perfectly accurate, but at least you can see what the hell is going on and where your bullets are landing. If you're close enough, you can ensure the first round is a headshot. The downside is that you can't see anything on the HUD when scoped in, which is stupid. Apparently looking through a scope precludes you from realizing you're bleeding and how badly hurt you are.
I've got the fast firing AK-74 right now, and it's been good enough for what I've been fighting against. I'm starting to come up against mercs now though, so I'm hoping to find something accurate out to longer ranges so I can start getting first-round headshots.
Captain Colon

The fast-firing ak is AWESOME, especially with a scope and grenade launcher fitted. Only problem is the faster fire rate means it breaks down faster, so it'll start jamming a lot pretty quick. I just dumped it once I got the storming obakan or however you spell it.
And as if I haven't said it enough...get the realism mod (or one of the other damage mods that DOESN'T erase your saves) if you don't like the damage :kak: It's a lot more fun to actually be able to kill someone with the suppressed pistol before he shouts out your position to everyone else around.

You don't actually lose your saves!
I figured it out -- the patch changes a profile and the profile changes the save directory
The first one was messed up so they corrected it...
The pre-patch (and mod) profile points to:
C:\Documents and Settings\all users.windows\documents\stalker-shoc
The post-patch profile points to:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\STALKER-SHOC
Just move things from the first to the second. Don't overwrite, just rename.
