Ok, just played it for a bit. It's very much a sort of the 1942 version. Helis control the same, vehicles are faster, and the FAVs are really crappy on the control aspect. More interesting air fights, and the AA is very effective. The gunner doesn't get TV missles anymore, the main pilot does, they're not one hit kill, but they're nearly as deadly. Fun, definitely worth trying.

i'm only playing if I get to have guns

(seriously, spectre? 105mm and all?)

Wow, while the AA is good. I think it's too good, you don't stand much of a chance unless you know exactly where it's coming from, because stationary AA guns rip you a new one. Don't get me started on the planes. :(

Fuck. DC helos were way too complex to fly.

ok, after playing some more, I'm gonna say this sucks for the moment. The attack helis are too slow, jets too powerful, and infantry are way too fast. on infantry maps I can barely hit anyone coupeld with the reg and how fast the sprint. :(

They're very very touchy.

I like what they can do, and they don't seem to have as much of that "handling on ice" feel that they did in 1942

Played it today for a bit is pretty good but it needs some work. The arty is awesome but they havent implemented the old aiming system yet so getting it working is pretty hit and miss (pardon the pun)

The real problem I'm having with framerates and it appears to be getting worse. In order to get a decent fps I'm now running the game in 800x600 mode at the lowest settings. In this the game actually looks worse than DC did for 1942! Anyone have any suggestions other than a video card on its way out?

Odd, I've been having issues with all versions of BF2 and its mods. For example, I tried playing Special Forces and I was getting spf (seconds per frame) but only when I looked in certain directions. For example, playing Warlord, I was ok in the warlords palace until I started looking down towards the TV tower. It's the oddest experience to be running around fine until you look one way and you fps drops through the floor. It's like moving in treacle (molasses)

How does it stack up to Project Reality?

I, myself, much prefer DC. But they're on opposite sides of the spectrum.

DC goes for gameplay and sacrifices realism (and thus is much more fast paced).

PR is all realism, sacrificing gameplay (IMO). Slower but more realistic and immersive. (<-- Firefox doesn't think "immersive" is a word)

Mirsky, explain to me in more detail the arty. I might have to dig out my BF2 cd's for this.

If you ever played BF 1942 it's the same system. Or Point of Existence 2.

1). Sniper or assault kits have GLTD (glorified binoculars). The pull it out then spot using the "q" commo-rose.

2). Other player hops in an artillery vehicle (US: MLRS, M109 Howitzer, SCUD-B - Opp: BM-21 GRAD, M109 Howitzer, SCUD-B)

3). Mount the firing position (F2 for all of them I'm pretty sure)

4). Right click to see where the spot is then right click again to get back to normal view. Then make a guess and line up your gun the best you can with out the spot...mainly just try and get the left/right on target using the map and the little view-angle thing on the vehicle icon your in.

5). Right click to get back into the spotter's view. It's a view of the spotter's POV, not necessarily zoomed in like he may have been with his binos.

6). Take a couple of cold-barrel shots to get on target. The arty camm will follow the shell's trajectory so you can adjust pitch and...latitude? (left/right)

7). Make adjustments as necessary and just keep firing until your dead or out of ammo.

I love the arty system. It's the biggest thing I missed in BF2.
