ok i have a friend whos deadset on getting vista home premium
I've erred him against it, as the comp he has right now ( building it piece by piece ) only has 512mb of DDR2 PC-5300 and will only have a 7300GS ( a gracious gift of mine, i can't let him suffer through onboard video )
but anyway, under ideal conditions which is the better buy 32bit or 64bit?
i've read that 64bit is the best for gaming, but you need a gig + of ram to utilize Vista's 'prowess' correctly
oh well, ram is cheap.

Vista will not work without 1GB of RAM - period.
I don't have any trouble with Vista Home Premium on my PC at home, even in gaming. I didn't even encounter the 5fps drop that aparrently came with the new territories of Vista.
I'm running a HP Pavillion with Intel Pentium Duo 3.0GHz with 1GB DDR2-5300 and Geforce 7600GT 256mb.
No dramas at all, but your mate is going to need an extra stick of 512 if he wants to use Vista at all.

Gaming with 1G of RAM under 64-bit is awful.

All versions of Vista are on the DVD, which you get to install depends on the key you have. You should be able to choose between 32 and 64 bit during the installation. However, the real question is... does your hardware manufacturers have Vista drivers, even more so 64bit drivers?
I can get a copy of Vista Ultimate for ~$50 from MS directly and I'm still wavering on whether to buy it as a future investment. If anyone remembers previous releases of MS O/S' there's always been alot of resistance at first until the hardware manufacturers start selling machines capable of running it at the same speeds as the previous iteration. I'm betting this is going to happen, rather than the alternate scenario where the whole thing gets dropped (remember Windows ME?).

Well in that case why not tell him to stop buying stupid shit he doesn't need?

Tell him if he gets Vista he's on his own tech-support wise.

Is vista really this hard?
I forked around with it a bit, and it takes some getting used to, but I thought it was fairly simple...

IT's not THAT bad, I have a friend who's family literally just went from 98 to Vista. They hadn't done ANY upgrading in between, and even he's picked up on Vista quickly enough and he's practically fucking illiterate. If he can manage it then someone with two grains of sense should be able to.

Nobody said it was hard to use, just that it won't support half your software and/or hardware. Why do you think the OTF Podcast disappeared?
