I was thinkin' 'bout that one.
To hear a reccomendation on it makes it sound better.
And I'm hearing good things about Heros of manna. Since Nippon Ichi turned me on to the stratagy/RPG catagory (Odd, though, as the other manna games were action/rpg's)

Kirby canvas curse, most fun game I played on the DS
Advanced Wars DS is also pretty good if your like the genre (turn based strat).

Has anyone heard anything about Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja?
It looks interesting.
And getting the Kirby game is, I think, a given. My mom LOVES Kirby games (well, we didn't bother with that one for N64...) and this DS will be a "family shared" system, so I'll have to share the time using it.
While I'm at it, what accessories do you reccomend?
I saw a thingie that you attach the stylus to that makes it more like handeling a pen than a toothpick, protective cases, ect...
An alternate to the toothpick stylus is something I'm wanting. As a guy who once picked up a basketball with 1 hand, thin pen-like devices give me nasty cramps in the hand...

Okay, I've been playing 'till my fingers cramp. Here's the lowdown:
1: FF3 : Dad picked this one. We now have, in one form or another, all of the first 6 FF games. So far it's what I wanted: Old school feel, new school graphics.
2: My pick: Dragon quest heros: Rocket slime. Okay, it's an E game with cutsy-drawn characters and it's definatly targeted for the 10-13 age level, but I picked it because it's from my favorite RPG franchise ever (Origionally Dragon Warrior, due to copyright reasons) My first console RPG was the origional DW, and I've bought all the ones they released in the US (well, not that game boy color pokemon clone they did...) It's like playing a top-down LOZ game, but you're a slime, not a guy with a sword, and you attack by stretching yourself out like a rubber band and ramming your foes, or throwing stuff you pick up. Nice fun. Good for what it is. Don't expect the puzzles to challenge sherlock holmes, but a good diversion.
3: Mom's pick: A breakout-style game called "Bust 'em all" or something like that. She would've got the Kirby game, but it wasn't in stock. Maybe next month.
Now, I'm going to go a bit "fanboy" for a moment, so just hit the back button if your getting bored...
My only real experiance with portables before was the Gameboy & GBA (origional, "flat gamepad with the screen in the middle" flavor) and I was blown away at how easy to see the screen was, even in dim light! The secong thing that surprised me was the good sound quality those teeny speakers produced (at least relitive to a GBA). When I forst saw the DS was over $100, I thought it might've been overpriced. Well, it ain't. If you value the time you waste, buy one.

Apparently it's something like nethack. I have a copy right here, but i haven't actually spent the time to get past the intro dialogue. Looks kinda quirky, and the storyline is a bit of a break from the usual cliches.

There's a 'Moritoys' long stylus that's very good and has a metal shaft, (unf) but there's also a few really crappy extenable ones that just bend and or break under normal and more intense playing pressure. You can import them from play-asia.com, but they don't stay in stock long. There's also a more pen-sized stylus somewhere that has its own clip that mounts on the bottom of your phat/lite DS.
As for games, i'm just going to be lazy and quote verbatim this list from the SA games forums, as it's pretty much what i'd be telling you anyway.
The Highest Rated Games
This is the best of the best, though many other games could easily be in your personal top cut.
Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Animal Crossing: Wild World
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
Mario Kart DS
Metroid Prime: Hunters
New Super Mario Bros.
Star Fox Command
Tetris
The Creative Niche:
Many of these are fan favorites, and most utilize the touch screen in an innovative manner.
Elite Beat Agents
Phoenix Wright: Justice for All
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (Thread)
Trauma Center: Under the Knife
Hotel Dusk
Nintendogs
Kirby: Canvas Curse
Meteos
Brain Age
Big Brain Academy
Electroplankton
Warioware: Touched!
Yoshi Touch and Go
Rub Rabbits
Trace Memory
Other Games of Note
Many of these are worth owning, especially if you can pick them up on the cheap.
Clubhouse Games
Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales
Kirby Squeak Squad
Lunar Knights
Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time
Mario Hoops 3-on-3
Mario vs. Donkey Kong: March of the Minis
Megaman ZX
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon
Puzzle Quest
Sonic Rush
Super Mario 64
Yoshi's Island DS
I'm not really the kind of person to get into Japanese RPGs, so i can't give much in the way of personal input. What games do you already have/know about? The Phoenix Wright series is awesome, as is Trauma Center, and the brain training games are pretty nifty, though they're not actual games.

If it's like nethack, I think I'll like it. (I guess that means random-gen dungeons, fighting monsters for random stuff, ect...)
As for a stylus, well, I tried an old palm pilot stylus (the palm-p being long dead) I have on the touchscreen, and it worked fine, so I'm going to cut off an inch or so from the tip and mount it on an old dried out pen shaft with epoxy.
Actually, I might use one of these old .223 cartridge cases as a mount for the stylus tip...
