View Full Version : Big IRC problems

Well, the first thing I noticed was that McAfee told me I had a trojan (generic component) on my aliases.ini file right when I booted up IRC. Then I found out my nick, WOOO, was "taken." I keep running virus scans and the trojan keeps showing up. I'm not sure if it's a false positive or if it really is a trojan, and I don't know what to do about it.

Help?

I'd say start the comp up in Safe Mode, then run your virus scanner again.

Trojans can get in a million ways, but if it coincides with IRC usage it's possible you're running an insecure network/vulnerable (outdated) software, and you didn't mask your IP. So a bot may have used a buffer overflow exploit on your system using the unhidden IP found via IRC and injected a trojan that way.

There's a billion possible circumstances that could cause your problem, that's only one. Supply more details.

Also about nicknames on IRC, anyone can use whatever they want. If you're not on the IRC server I can use your name, and you won't be able to use it again until it's released (by me leaving or changing my nick.) Just set up a few alternate nicks in the list in case.

What more details do you want? I'm using the latest IRC provided from the website (I think). [Edit: yeah, 6.16.]

Hm, to make an analogy of the situation: basically you've told me you took a right on 5th street, heard a puncturing noise, and got out of your car, and found a flat tire. Finding the cause of the flat tire given this information is basically guesswork. You get where I'm coming from?

Anyway it's neither here nor there; make sure your machine is up to date and try to use your anti-virus to get rid of the trojan.

What IRC client are you using?

Uh, MIRC?

I also tried the Trillian one, and it was acting wonky. But that might just be because Trillian's IRC client is shit.

Run Avast!'s boot-time scanner to remove them there pesky trojans.

You might be one of those ZOMBIES used in DDoS'ing servers. D:

Or it could just be that McAffee is going nuts and assuming outright that IRC is a trojan. I've had that happen to me before. I suggest turning off McAffee outright.
Or just uninstall it, baleet everything, and reinstall a fresh ver.
As for nicks, just type /nick StinkyMcButtFace and you'll change your name.

Avast! is totally awesome. It's really easy to use, not bloated, and provides really good resident protection (P2P, IM, Network, two kinds of Mail, Web, Script Blocking, Standard [On access], etc... ). Definitions tend to be updated everyday.
