This issue has perplexed me for ages. I finally got tired of having to run across my house to print something so I decided to network all the printers in my house. I went through the add printer wizard and successfully networked 3/4 printers in the house. However the 4th printer is currently connected to my dad's business computer which is running some sort of absurdly tight corporate firewall. When I attempt to add the printer to my computer it gives me access denied messages. I do not see firewall options I can alter on the computer.

Since this is a directly networkable printer (HP 4050N) my next thought was to simply remove the printer from my dad's computer and plug it right into my router wih a cat5 cable. When I tried this it I got the same access denied message. I looked on hp's website to see if there was a driver or software i needed for networking printers and I came up short. Any suggestions?

You've got to give the printer an IP address. This can be done either through settings on the printer, or software that comes with the printer, that you run on a workstation.
Once you've done that, you need to open a port to the printer, and assign it a name, which you then tag the IP address to, so everybody can print to it.

It only needs an IP if its its own identity... or rather.. no computer connected to it...

If its connected to a computer then it doesnt need its own IP. It depends on the setup.

As far as the firewall computer, yea, what mafi said, you need to make sure that connections from your LAN computers are allowed (trust the IP addresses)...

He said he hooked it up to the router. I'm just going off tht setup. If he can't work out how to control the super-firewall, it's easier this way.
