So I wanted to see how my lappy would compare to my desktop computer:

Desktop:
AMD Athlon 64 2800+ Newcastle 800MHz FSB Socket 754 (yes I know I need socket 939)
2 GB 3200 DDR Ram
X800XL w/ 256 MB ram

Laptop:
Pentium M 740 (1.73 GHZ)
1 GB DDR2 RAM
Geforce Go 6800

In aquamark the laptop got:
Total: 50,208
GPU: 6,798
CPU: 9,601

Desktop Got:
Total: 58,846
GPU: 8,874
CPU: 8,730

I was pretty impressed, able to run HL2 at full gfx with around 50 FPS with a damn laptop... These pentium M chips are impressing me.

Also shows me my next upgrade on my desktop should be the mobo and processor.. .go socket 939 and dual core. :D

the Geforce GO 6800 is a fantastic laptop card. I got a Geforce Go 7800GTX coming very shortly for a XGS laptop.

Damn mister moneybags...

I looked at the XGS's... but for the same exact setup they charge like near a grand more... Fooooook that.

Mine just came in friday, and it might be going with someone else in the department for a week or so. As soon as I get my hands on it, i'll run aquamark and 3dmark 03/05 and see how it fares.

I did test on 1 XGS we had, with only 1gb of ram, and a Geforce Go 6800 Ultra and I believe it was somewhere around 5-6k in 3dmark05.

If you google it, you should be able to find the score on a webpage.

Have you OC'd the vidcard yet? I got around 4100-4200 last time I tried, and I have almost the same laptop as you.

How exactly does one go about OCing a laptop video card? Are there any special precautions needed for the differences in cooling compared to desktops?

damn you people and your new computers

Athlon 1.33GHz
512MB 133 SDRAM
GeForce 4 Ti4200

standard aquamark test ran at 15-20fps most of the time, hitting 7-8 during vegetation and particle tests, and 5.6 during the huge arse explosion

scores:
GFX: 1941
CPU: 3322
overall: 15018

yeah, i need a new comp

postscript - dropping anisotropic to 2x, turning on triple buffers and running the demo mode ran fine, with fps that would be acceptable ingame (probably 20-40, although theres no counter in demo mode)

All ya gotta worry about moreso then with a desktop is heat.

I never OC my graphics card unless I need to to play a game.. the processor on my desktop is OCed a little bit, but not too much.

No, none that I know of. The Nvidia drivers come with an auto-overclocking utility that incrementally OC's the card until failure*, then backs off to the last safe clocking. You can also manually set the clockspeeds, but the driver won't let you apply them until you test them first.

Every game I've played so far has been OC-friendly except Guild Wars, which sometimes flips out and turns the screen into a big pink and green jumbled mess. Overall OCing is safe and worth it, though... playing GW and HL2 at 1920x1200 with smooth frame rates is a dream.

*I'm not really sure how the software determines "failure" to be honest

StandingCow

Failure is when it starts showing.. oh whats it called... "Artifacts"... distortions in the graphics.

Again, I dont need to OC because Im happy with good fps at 1280x800... or so.
