I guess this goes here since I kind of need advice, or at least help!

Does anyone here in the forums live there or ever been there? There is a slight possibility of me (and MAYBE my family) moving there. There is also a slight possibility of me going to Shimer, the Great Books college there. I was just wondering where would be a sweet place to live at around there, or if there is a good resource for researching where would be a sweet place to live at. Also, how expensive is it? I plan on probably commuting by bicycle, but if it comes down to it I'll have a car that has good gas mileage to use.

I used to live there when I was younger. It's been a while since last time I've set foot there, but I don't think it has changed much. Yeah Chicago is a pretty big city. The cool think about Chicago is that you really don't need to own a car there. It has one of the best public transportation systems in the country. You can get anywhere you need to go by subway and/or bus and cheaply too.

The Museum of Science and Industry and the Museum of Natural History are world renowned institutions.

But like any city, there are the bad areas. There is a really violent criminal element there because as you know it's Chicago. Also, the police have a real bad reputation of being corrupt in the truest sense.

Yeah I kind of expected a lot more crime than normal. Is it expensive to live there? I didn't know it had one of the best transportation systems in the country, but that makes it even better. If my parents move there I would just live with them until I could afford my own place, but if I were to move alone it would be kinda hard.

They've got a great Polish community and one of the best soccer teams in the nation. Although I couldn't do much more than tell you a few good soccer pubs.

I used to go there every summer, but that was awhile ago and I don't remember much. Bad crime and bad humidity. Awesome public transportation.

From what I hear, chicago is pretty expensive to live in. Although, now a days, you could just live in one of the 'burbs along the L and be in the city in 20 min. But if you are talking inter city living, yes, it is expensive, especially north side (where you don't die).

Chicago is named after an Indian and it should be called chingashgook or something like that. It is a big place, supposed to be windy and I don't know much more about it. Oh - there's a lake. And everybody hates Illinois nazis!

The police aren't actually that corrupt, it's just a reputation. The city is pretty awesome, and getting more awesome as the years go on, beacuse the mayor is doing huge improvement projects around the city. Living in the city is pretty expensive, and living in the 'burbs can be even more expensive, depending on the place. Stay away from the south side of the true city, that's where, for the most part, white folks go to die.

Other than all that, I don't know for sure where all the good places are, but I imagine if you do some looking online you could find some places to live.

Is it far from Chicago? I would be down to do this, actually. Just need a job!

If the suburbs are anything like they are here I wanna stay as far away from them as possible. I wasn't expecting to live in the city (I know that'd be expensive) but my parents told me that I might as well. I was thinking I'd maybe live somewhere on the outskirts, like a 10 or 15 minute drive into the city, but I am not too sure yet.

Thanks for the tips. I am not even sure if I am actually getting into the college yet, but if I do I really wanna make sure I do things fine (money is tight). I'm really looking for a change of scenery, I completely loathe Arizona. Also, the college I may possibly get into seems pretty good and is actually close to what I want to study.

Springfield is probably 3.5 hours south of Chicago. If you're going to school in Chicago, it'd be totally unfeasable. :/

Also, Illinois is just as flat as I imagine Arizona is, but instead of rocks and sand, it's corn and soybeans covering the landscape.

Well if you go to hospital in Chicago expect to be treated by actors and to appear on tv, such is my understanding of ER.
