View Full Version : Tougher Penalties for spoilers

I am quite sure its clear to everyone that I got pretty annoyed when Onyx posted Transformer's spoilers in the movie thread.
It is also pretty clear that nothing was done about it other than his post edited.
I suppose there's two rules which do cover not posting spoilers:
" Don't act like an obnoxious jackass just for the sake of acting like an obnoxious jackass. Or for pretty much any reason, for that matter"
"Don't be a jerk to those around you."
Even so, if people don't use the spoiler tags something should happen. Furthermore, for crap like happened last year with the threads "http://forums.worldatwarmod.com/showthread.php?t=453&highlight=harry+potter"
That pretty much gave away book endings.
This garbage has got to stop, and have a stop put to it. There needs to be more than just a slap on the wrist because I know for a fact that anything less than a ban doesn't mean dick to me, so it's not going to for anyone else either.
As of today I've had the endings to three TV shows and four movies ruined because people can't be bothered to find a spoiler tag and use it. I think its time you guys make them be bothered.

or you could avoid reading those threads?

Sounds more like you just have sand in your vagina, if you're seriously asking for a ban over it.

I'm just asking for more to be done, than someone just saying "that's naughty" As I pointed out, over nearly two years there's a bunch of times its occurred, yet even though its again the rules, nothing gets done.
Oh and as for the whole "don't read the thread" how is that fair? For starters if someone posts a movie title they could be saying anything to do with the movie, their comment could be "I'm going to see this tomorrow."
The onus shouldn't be on the reader, but on the person who's posting. Especially with all that "snape kills dumbledore" crap that went on in 05, KK, Colon and Moe went posting it everywhere. I didn't care, necessarily about that spoiler, but a lot of people did.
I'm not asking for a ban, not a perma ban anyway, but its a breach of the rules. IMO, with the shit you guys cop for treating different people and different rules at your whims, I thought you'd be more interested in actually enforcing the one rule in this place that actually, if breached, is detrimental to people.

If I see a thread that with a movie title that I really want to see, I don't read it. Even if it is a movie that I marginally want to see, I don't read it. Why? Because people are going to ruin the endings. Fact of life.
Ok, so it is kinda impolite to not use a spoiler, since that is what they are there for, but if it was SUCH A BIG DEAL FOR YOU TO KNOW THE ENDING AND NOW THE WHOLE MOVIE IS RUINED FOR YOU FOREVER AND EVER AND EVER I honestly don't think you would have read the thread in the first place.
Oh and for future reference: You know those 100's of movies you are going to see in your life time? In 99.9% of them, the good guy wins.fuck, now you might as well stop watching movies

SO you're saying it shouldn't matter if people want to ruin things for others, because its a fact of life, even though it breaks two rules..

None of the examples you provided had anyone intentionally attempting to spoil the endings of the movie or books. The post regarding the end of the last Harry Potter book was also posted several weeks after the book came out, unless I'm mistaken.
Banning someone for forgetting to use a spoiler tag is pretty unlikely, unless it becomes a habit. That said, if you haven't seen the movie or read the book and you see a thread that's going to be discussing it, it might be best ot just avoid that thread altogether until such a time as you have watched or read the media in question.

That's why I avoided the threads on the fourth Die Hard.

We're currently considering implementing the death penalty for not using spoiler tags when appropriate. Texas already backs us. :lincoln:

Vader is Luke's father. Samuel L Jackson is the bad guy in Indestructible. Sam saves the day but doesn't leave Casablanca. Verbal is Kaiser Sose. Ryan gets saved. Mr Saxon is the Master. The 300 lose, but buy enough time to save Greece. It's People! Mr Orange is a cop.

You could learn to enjoy the ride of a story rather than the end or the climax. That's what I did with 1408, and Transformers, and Harry Potter, and every other movie/book when an important part was spoiled for me.

Who says I didn't? Point is though, I shouldn't have to enjoy x part of a book or movie, because the ending or pivotal plot development has been ruined.

Actually, the sixth book was ruined for me well before the book came out by a random person on the old FA forums; with a nice thread title like "Snapekillsdumbeldorelol"
I think the main thing that should be avoided is intentional spoilers done for the sake of pissing people off, like in that thread. Yet I've yet to see any threads like that on here, say for example when the 7th harry potter book comes out, I will simply avoid the fucking internet until I've finished it. I refuse to have the ending laid out ahead this time (though I still enjoyed the sixth book profusely even though the ending had been ruined two weeks ahead of time.)

I agree that unless something is spoiled with malicious intent, there's no reason for punishment.
BlindSite
July 16th, 2007, 12:22 PM
Its not hard to use spoiler tags. If you leave it up to malicious intent. Then how hard is it for someone to simply post an ending and then say they forgot the tags...
Its not a hard thing to do.

Ok, this thread is over, you have made your point BS, I dont think its going to change.
Also, for those of you that report posts, just because we didn't catch it within 1.5 seconds, doesn't mean we allowed it, it means we didn't see it yet. Chill out.
