for a few weeks now (a few weeks of computer-use time, not real-time) my MSN has died everytime i loaded it up.
the problem started with 7.0, but happily went away after a day or so. the problem came back again and would not remove itself - MSN 7.5 had just been released, so i downloaded and installed that.
same problem.
i completely uninstalled MSN, and reinstalled 7.5, same problem. i reinstalled 7.0, same problem.
i re-downloaded the 7.5 install file from three different sources - de/re-installing each time.
i am now stuck with Windows Messenger. which is shit - any help?

I'm assuming you've completely updated and are definite that you don't have some virus lurking somewhere. You can try to delete the leftover stuff when it uninstalls, and cleaning out the registry keys as well afterwards, but I'm not sure how that would work with MSN, since it's a Windows component.

Are you getting an error message about the crashes or does it steathily crash like mine does? If you aren't getting an error message, check the MSN folder for an error log.

MSN is an impressively hard thing to filter... it even goes through http port 80 when certain ports are blocked, so having connection issues with a fresh MSN install and nothing else indicates a deeper problem existing in your system.
Either that or your connection is just maxed out downloading stuff. MSN is very upload-bandwidth sensitive. Sometimes when I'm all-out uploading on bittorrent at 110k/s with a shitload of connections, msn doesn't want to connect until a little while after I close all the other shit down.

...No, it literally crashed every time he started it up. If someone started a conversation with him, BAM, he'd get pwned.

You might try an alternate program such as GAIM or Trillian to see if it's MSN that's messing, or your internet.

saruman, first make sure that you completely remove all traces of MSN before reinstalling. Use the same method to clean up that I posted here : http://forums.worldatwarmod.com/showpost.php?p=109172&postcount=4
After a clean install I would check your firewall settings and make sure the MSN port is not blocked in any way.
