so I'm trying to install norton antivirus free eddittion on my mom's computer and it keeps coming up with this thing. when i first installed it it said 'an update has not been started please reboot computer' so i did..and it came up with the same thing. and when i try to get it to update it says update unsucessful. any clues to why it's doing this? and how to fix it? she doesn't have a firewall..and the professional version worked on it for her.

I vaguely recall having a similar problem at some point - there probably is a manual update file on Grisoft's site, try installing that.

well, im not sure what your problem is. is it with AVG or norton? if its AVG, try this:
double click the AVG icon
double click update manager
uncheck 'do not ask for update source'
go to the AVG site www.grisoft.com
manually DL the latest update and definitions into a DL folder
right click the AVG icon -> update
it will now ask you where to get it from. select hard disk, then wherever you saved it
should fix most problems with the updater
