I just purchased a PCI-E compliant 64 bit mother board that may or may not work, for 2 USD. I was wondering what you guys recommend for PCI-E cards.

I'm gonna change one letter on you here and say 6800GS. Looking at the specs, it's almost like a hybrid of the 6800/6800GT (only 12 pipes [and non-unlockable], but with 256MB of GDDR3), but running at higher clock speeds than either (425Mhz core vs 350 on a GT). It draws less power than a 6800GT, and benchmarks just as well.
Plus, it's way cheaper than a 6800GT, and only slightly more expensive than a vanilla 6800.
This whole thing nVidia's been doing lately where they announce new cards and actually have them available is pretty cool. Maybe ATI should try it.

It's cheaper, less hot, and runs faster because it's manufactured on a (I think) 110 (maybe 100)nm process (the 6800GS, that is). Somehow, they manage to sell this newer, better version of the NV42 core at USD$100 less than a 6800GT, while putting up the same stats as a 6800GT. The 6800GT is manufactured on a 130nm process, and as we all know, the smaller the die, the less power needed and thus less heat produced.
It's a good card, but don't look for it past Q1 2006. If you want one, get it now, or over X-Mas season.

Not sure if he meant in a realistic price range or not.

Yeah. :(
If ATi doesn't shape up and do something like that, or pull a rabbit out of their hat that makes the X1800XT look like a pocket calculator, things don't look so good for the next maybe year.

The new nvidia card is rather huge also.. the heatsink anyway...
The race between the graphics cards will keep going back and forth.
Right now PCI-E cards dont have much of an advantage over AGP.. just like 5 FPS better... Im sure that will change as they take more advantage of it.

GS is proly the best price/performance ratio card out there next to the modded x800GTO2
watch out tho, if there's something wrong with the board, it could fry your components, make sure to test it with junk before you stick it in there.

On the 512MB 7800GTX, yeah, that one's hell of huge. On the 6800GS, not really, it's the same as 6800/6800GT ones.
