i was downloading Aol Instant messanger but i canceled the download halfway through. now i cannot delete the partial file thats on my desktop... ive had this problem in the past. One time I was able to open up some window and it allowed it to not run on startup and the next reboot i was able to delete the file... i was hoping someone could help me out. :(

Can you delete it in safe mode?

Install that and it adds "move/delete on next boot" options to your context menu, great for getting rid of files that keep giving you that pesky message.

I agree with DB here, try booting it up in Safe Mode then deleting it. Otherwise, go into your Task Manager and try to end whatever process is using it (though I don't recommend this unless you know what you're doing, you might end up shutting down your firewall or something if you end the wrong process).

personally, i would have been more concerned about finding what process was claiming to be using the file, since stuff thats doing things you dont want is generally bad.
mind you, did you try just closing firefox first?

My guess is FF was the application using the file.
