..so apparently my uncle came over and did something to the router. now i can't keep connections on aim or irc. any ideas on what it would be? we have a dlink DI-524

it worries me that he's a supposed computer genius and my om said his words were 'i think i broke it'

Lesson. Self-proclaimed computer genius' usually aren't.

Anyways, I've never touched that particular router (or anything besides the 604) but why don't you do a reset. I'm sorry if you already know this but there should be a button somewhere on the router that you can press in with a long slender object (like my penis !ZING!) which will reset your router to factory settings. If you've got any settings stored in the router maybe write them down?

As for a specific solution, I can't really offer any help. If you wanna fiddle around go to http://192.168.0.1 with the username "admin" and password either blank or "admin", I can't remember which. Anyways, sorry if I'm telling you something you may already know.

Edit:

http://www.portforward.com/ may be of some help.

yea he apparently reset it too. i tried that. i'm having a friend connect to my computer via vnc to look at it and fiddle with it. if worse comes to worse i'll just directly connect to the cable modem for the night =s

..if only he was just a self proclaimed computer genius, he has college degrees to back his claims up =[

You could call DLink for specific help on network settings.

The DLink website should have an online manual for you to access if you can't find your paper documentation.

Yea, dont let him touch it.

As for security, you really dont need any as long as you have a MAC filter set up... the only way people would break into it from what I understand is some kinda linix server nearby recieving the packets or whatever... and I dont think anyone wants your info that badly..

I was fiddling around with my neighbours wireless router because he didn't change the admin password. :p

Might as well just post our router issue here instead of making a new thread, since it's probably unsolvable anyway...

Basically the power light and the lights for any ports that are connected to something just blink incessantly, and the router functions as a hub not a router (ie each computer gets an ISP-assigned IP instead of a router IP and the router getting an ISP IP). Reset does nothing, cutting power does nothing, can't connect to the router through a browser (unknown host, tried every possible standard router IP), tried updating the firmware, says it can't connect to the hardware. I'm just going to find an old switch from my dad's house or something but I was just wondering if anyone knew what the deal was :)

Did you ever fuck up a firmware upgrade? Your router might be toast..

I don't care, it's my shitty roommate's not mine :D

But no, I doubt anyone in his family even knows what firmware is.
