If you move/click/do anything, the puppy dies. Get a book.

I tried that, and it still dies every now and again. before the end of level 2 at the least.

maybe my mouse moves slightly on its own or something?

Must be. If the cursor moves even one pixel, that's it for the puppy. Otherwise it should be fine.
